Infusion Medication Management Systems a Key Initiative for Improving Patient Safety
(Amherst, NH) – Infusion is one of the most common in-patient procedures. Multi-component infusions are often prescribed according to the physiological purpose of the infusion, as opposed to the specific product. Drugs that are commonly used in the ICU—sedatives, antimicrobial agents, vasopressors, and anticoagulants—contribute to a higher proportion of errors than other medications and these errors are associated with greater patient harm. The narrow therapeutic range of many agents in these categories and the volume of routine use are potential contributors to their risk potential.
