CMD: Why a lot of back pain often starts in the mouth and hardly anyone knows it
Dentist or orthopaedist? New book shows: CMD can promote back pain, pelvic obliquity and even hernias.Back pain, pelvic misalignment, persistent tension - millions of people suffer from this. But what if the cause is not in the back? What if it originates in the jaw?
In his book "CMD - The forgotten problem of modern medicine", author Markus Schall shows how a malfunction in the jaw joint - known as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) - can lead to complaints that at first glance have nothing to do with the mouth: from spinal problems and pelvic torsion to hernias, haemorrhoids or chronic muscle overload.
An interference field that is underestimated - and affects the whole body
CMD refers to a dysregulation in the interaction between the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, skull, cervical spine and the entire musculoskeletal system. A misalignment of the jaw can spread downwards via so-called muscle and fascia chains - with far-reaching consequences:
* Pelvic misalignment and leg length discrepancies
* Blockages of the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints (SIJ)
* Tension in the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles
* Promotion of hernias or haemorrhoids due to muscular imbalances
* Instabilities in the entire gait apparatus
This is striking: The complaints are often chronic, persistent - and resistant to treatment as long as the underlying cause is not recognized. And this is precisely where the problem lies: only a few dentists in Germany specialize in CMD, and many orthopaedists do not recognize the connection. The result: long periods of suffering - and incorrect treatments.
"If the pelvis is misaligned, the cause may lie in the jaw"
The author speaks from personal experience. For years, Markus Schall suffered from diffuse symptoms: recurring problems in his lower back, alternating muscle tension, digestive problems, feelings of pressure in the pelvic area - and the feeling of being out of balance.
It wasn't until a holistic dentist took precise measurements of his jaw and initiated splint therapy that the breakthrough came. Supported by osteopathic treatment, it gradually became clear that the cause was higher up than he had thought.
"Only when I understood how closely everything is connected - jaw, back, pelvis, nervous system - did everything suddenly make sense," says Schall. In his book, he describes this path in detail and shows how such symptoms should no longer be seen as random isolated cases, but as part of a larger pattern.
How do you recognize that CMD could be the cause?
Typical warning signs of physically pronounced CMD:
* Frequent back tension - especially in the lumbar spine, thoracic spine or SI joint area
* Leg length differences without clear orthopaedic findings
* One-sided strain when walking or standing
* Chronic hip problems or groin pressure
* Recurrent haemorrhoids or hernias despite a sporty lifestyle
* Jaw clicking, grinding or tense chewing muscles as an accompanying symptom
Anyone with such complaints should not just think about orthopaedics or surgery - but should also consider the jaw. A visit to a holistic dentist or an experienced osteopath, who views the body as a whole and does not just treat individual symptoms, is particularly recommended.
Diagnosis after two years - a personal turning point
Markus Schall knows the typical paths of suffering from his own experience. He spent around two years looking for answers - from GP to orthopaedist, from alternative practitioner to specialist, always with a growing list of complaints: two hernia operations, two haemorrhoid operations, chronic tension, increasing chemical sensitivity, poor posture and the feeling that he was "no longer standing properly" in his own body.
It was not until early 2022 that a holistic dentist recognized the actual cause: a pronounced craniomandibular dysfunction. Since the start of targeted splint therapy, the statics of his entire musculoskeletal system have visibly changed - and it suddenly became clear that all the accompanying symptoms were directly related to the misaligned jaw.
This experience not only shaped his understanding, but also the depth and clarity with which the book is written. It is aimed at anyone who has felt misunderstood for years - and wants to finally find the cause behind their complaints.
CMD is more than just tinnitus and headaches - it is a systemic problem
While CMD is often associated with tinnitus, migraines or dizziness - and these symptoms are also covered in detail in the book - Schall reveals another dimension in this chapter: the effect of CMD on the body's structure.
This book is particularly useful for people with years of musculoskeletal complaints who run from doctor to doctor without ever finding a convincing cause. It helps to recognize connections - and perhaps to look in the right places for the first time.
