Automatic recognition of emotions: The next generation of speech assistants

01-16-2017 08:18 PM CET | IT, New Media & Software

Press release from: audEERING GmbH

Since the introduction of speech assistants like Apple’s SIRI, Google Now, and Microsoft’s Cortana, the automatic recognition of spoken text has revolutionized the way we interact with computers. Yet, speech recognition is only the first step towards natural communication: The start-up Audeering GmbH founded by Prof. Björn Schuller (University of Passau and Imperial College London) develops methods for recognition of information beyond spoken text, such as emotion, personality, age, gender, or interest.

Gilching/Oberpfaffenhofen, January 16th 2017. “An intelligent machine needs great perceptive abilities“ – this is how Prof. Schuller starts his talk at the “Summer Davos“ annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. His start-up Audeering GmbH, which was founded in 2012, has specialized on the computational perception of information in human speech. The company does not focus on the spoken text but on the state of the speaker: An intelligent speech assistant should not be limited to understanding what has been spoken – it should also recognize how it was spoken. Audeering has developed techniques that allow for analyzing a speech signal with respect to various characteristics, like emotion, personality, or age of the speaker. It even supports recognition of drunkenness, depression, or interest. Using its own awarded toolkit “openSMILE” and deep learning methods, Audeering obtains robust results using thousands of computed speech features.

The applied methodology for extracting speech features is the result of more than a decade of research effort which the founders of Audeering invested mostly at the Technische Universität München. Typical applications can not only be found within dialog systems but also in areas such as speech data analysis in call centers, clinical voice analysis (for example for detection of burn-out or depression), customer satisfaction studies, or gaming. Similar methods are also applied in the domain of music signal processing: By using modern strategies for machine learning it is possible to automatically recognize meter, genre, dance style, key, chords, and tempo – and use it for DJ applications, for example.

In cooperation with the world-famous emotion researcher Prof. Klaus Scherer (University of Geneva and LMU Munich), Audeering is currently developing a novel approach towards automatic emotion recognition which allows for detecting finer distinctions of speaker states, like doubt, admiration, or fascination. Based on latest findings in voice physiology and psychology this shall enable accurate and language-independent emotion recognition – without the need for acquiring large speech data collections for “training“ the recognizer.

“This approach shall lead to improved methods for recognition and possibly also therapy, especially in the areas of consumer research and health/wellbeing.”, says CEO Prof. Björn Schuller. Because of its importance, the project is being funded by a proof-of-concept grant of the European Commission since 2015.
