Fashion Design Institute is part of the Haute Couture Week in Paris
The graduates of the Düsseldorf Fashion School will present their collections on July 7, 2025 as part of the Paris Haute Couture Week.Haute Couture Week in Paris is one of the annual highlights that the fashion industry has to offer. Not only the big designers present their latest collections here. The event also offers up-and-coming talents the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the world. On the first day of Haute Couture Week, for example, the graduates of the Fashion Design Institute Düsseldorf will hold their final show. Not only the families of the graduates are invited, but also personalities from the French fashion industry.
THE HAUTE COUTURE WEEK
Haute couture is considered the supreme discipline in the fashion scene. It refers to individual, hand-made collections that fall into the realm of luxury fashion. Haute couture is not fashion that can be bought off the peg. The presentations of these collections are correspondingly opulent.
As haute couture is based in Paris, so to speak, the largest presentation event for the latest designs takes place in the French metropolis. Every year, major designers such as Maison Schiaparelli, as well as up-and-coming fashion designers who are studying fashion at the Fashion Design Institute, for example, take part.
TICKETS ARE HARD TO COME BY
The exclusivity associated with haute couture is also reflected in the entrance fee for Haute Couture Week in Paris. Becoming part of the tight schedule is a complicated affair, at least if you want to be part of the main show. Big brands have to be approved by a special committee. Smaller brands and coutiers therefore often present their shows independently of the official program in the city. For the graduates of the Düsseldorf Fashion School, the final show in Paris is therefore not only a great opportunity, but also an immense honor.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HAUTE COUTURE FOR THE FASHION WORLD
Haute couture is a fashion that perhaps 5000 customers worldwide can afford. It symbolizes French tradition, creativity and craftsmanship. At the Düsseldorf Fashion School, haute couture is taught as the highest form of tailoring.
As haute couture is a protected French term, coutiers are also of great importance to the French economy. In 2021, the haute couture market was estimated to be worth USD 11.5 billion. This figure is expected to rise to USD 13.5 billion by 2028. Haute couture also provides numerous career and training opportunities and is considered a point of reference for ready-to-wear.
CRITERIA FOR HAUTE COUTURE
If you really want to produce haute couture, you have to meet certain criteria. In principle, the term haute couture is legally protected in France. This means that only those who are full members of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode can actually produce haute couture fashion. Alternatively, it is also possible to apply as a guest member. However, non-members can only be admitted to the Fédération on the recommendation of members.
Those who do not fulfill these requirements are not allowed to give their collections the title Haute Couture. However, this does not mean that it is not possible to present your own collections during Haute Couture Week. The Düsseldorf Fashion School, for example, switches to a different location for its presentation. However, the institute still takes advantage of the fact that numerous designers are present during Haute Couture Week to see the talent of the graduates for themselves.
BECOMING PART OF THE COUTURE HOUSE IS NOT EASY
The graduates of the Düsseldorf Fashion School are hoping to attract the attention of larger brands at their graduation show. However, they are not alone in this, as haute couture is a major magnet that attracts numerous up-and-coming designers. If you want to become part of the couture house, you have to be innovative, creative and bold. Haute couture collections are not only characterized by the use of luxurious materials, but also by their uniqueness and personal touch.
A LOCATION STRAIGHT OUT OF TELEVISION
The Fashion Design Institute Düsseldorf was able to secure a very special location for the final show on July 7. The venue is the former summer house of the Spanish royal family, which film and series fans will be familiar with from the Netflix show "Emily in Paris". Here, the summer house serves as the backdrop for the office of Antoine Lambert, the charming owner of perfume brand Maison Lavaux. The special event will also be attended not only by the families of the graduates, but also by major designers from the French fashion world.
