BOSTON – International Poster Gallery on Newbury Street presents “Rare Modernist Posters”, an exhibition featuring outstanding selections from the gallery’s extensive holdings of modernist graphic design. Representing a wide variety of subject and countries, the exhibition will be on view March 20 to April 25, 2008. The show is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday noon to 6 pm. The Gallery is located at 205 Newbury Street in Boston. Call (617) 375-0076 or visit www.internationalposter.com for information.

The show features a variety of early modernist posters from Switzerland, Germany and Austria, countries whose graphic designers were on the leading edge of new design styles at the turn of the century. The show continues with powerful Constructivist designs from the Soviet Union, and striking Art Deco and Cubist inspired posters such as Paul Colin’s rare Lisa Duncan, 1927, for the popular Parisian performer of the times. The gallery show is concurrent with several events and exhibitions happening in Boston with a focus on modernist design.

“There is an increasing interest in all aspects of modernist design,” comments owner and poster expert Jim Lapides. “Very often poster designers were on the cutting edge of popularizing such design movements as Cubism, Futurism, Art Deco, De Stilj and other design styles. These 20th century modernist design movements are reflected in colorful and strongly graphic posters that are highly sought-after today.”
