Lead School Pilani JMA Celebrates UN World Environment Day WED 2025

Smt. JMA Pilani which has a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international significance celebrated World Environment Day on 05 Jun 2025.

The United Nations - UN General Assembly designated June 5th as World Environment Day (WED) in 1972, making it an annual global event focused on environmental awareness and action. The first celebration took place in 1973. Led by UNEP, the theme for World Environment Day 2025 is "Ending Global Plastic Pollution" which focuses on the widespread impact of plastic pollution, from visible waste to micro plastics in various ecosystems, and calls for action to reduce and eliminate it.

It has always been said that God is everywhere and in everything but lately with Plastics being found everywhere and in everything it has become a satire and assumed demonic dimensions. While plastic has many valuable uses, everyone has become over reliant on single-use or disposable plastic resulting in severe environmental consequences. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres message for the day is 'We Need Ambitious, Credible, Just Agreement to End Plastic Pollution Now".

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is single use. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 11 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. Microplastics tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year and many more if inhalation is considered.

Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan emphasized on the growing scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution and drive momentum to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink plastics use to build a cleaner and more sustainable future. Her suggestions included from asking the restaurants one frequents to stop using plastic straws and refusing plastic cutlery, to bringing one's own coffee mug to work, bringing own cloth /jute bags for shopping, to pressuring local authorities to improve how they manage city's waste.

It is a matter of pride that JMA Pilani has been a regular participant in Green Olympiad conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Led by the Principal, a team in JMA prepared paper bags from old newspapers and distributed the same to passersby in Nagarpalika Building, Pilani market place and bus stand. Also to mark the Environment Day Celebrations, Principal, teachers, staff and students took the Unite for Nature Pledge to protect the environment and to continuously motivate their family, friends and others about the importance of environment friendly habits.
