Award-Winning Short Film "Bloom" Marks Filmmaking Debut of Acclaimed Author Joy Harris-Bird
Bloom follows the emotional journey of Nia, a young Black girl who begins to question her place in a world that often tells her to shrink. Through lyrical narration and rich visual metaphors, the film explores themes of self-worth, growth, and personal identity in a way that resonates across generations.
Since its completion, Bloom has been gaining national and international recognition. It received Honorable Mention at the Austin Short Film Selection, was selected for screening at the Daytona Beach Short Film Festival, and is currently a finalist for the International Indie Film Award in Paris, France.
"This story reflects everything I believe in as a storyteller-truth, imagination, and the power of being seen," says Harris-Bird. "With Bloom, I wanted to create something visually striking and emotionally honest that encourages audiences to embrace the beauty of becoming."
Harris-Bird is the founder of JoyPark Studios, a Houston-based multimedia company dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices through animation, film, and educational media. With Bloom, she brings her passion for purpose-driven storytelling to the screen, marking a new and exciting chapter in her creative journey.
