Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2008: Dr. Andrew Benedek awarded for revolutionary water treatment technology
SINGAPORE – The numerously honoured and well-known Canadian researcher and businessman (founder and owner of the former ZENON Group), today´s Chief Executive Director of UTS Biogastechnik GmbH, Dr. Andrew Benedek, is awarded with this year´s Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize. The award, named after Singapore´s founding father, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, is an annual prize recognizing individuals or organizations for outstanding solutions to solve the world´s drinking water problems by using innovative technologies.Dr. Benedek is awarded for the development and commercialization of low-pressure membranes in water treatment, redefining the way water can be treated. His technology has already been used in the USA, Canada and Belgium as well as in the Federal Republic of Germany. This technology is able to produce drinking water from highly polluted water and distinguishes itself by its reliability and low cost.. This opens up great perspectives for the usage even in newly industrializing countries. Alongside the robustness of this technology, it also stands out by its mobility. Low-pressure membranes can easily be installed in container units and be transported from one site to the other.
Therewith the Nominating Committee considered all the criteria of the Lee Kuan Yew Prize as being fulfilled and honours the water treatment technology of Dr. Benedek in its argumentation as „a big leap that benefits mankind, both for those in developed and developing countries.” The prize is presented by Singapore´s Minister Mentor, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, himself on June 25 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore on the occasion of the Singapore International Water Week held from June 23 to June 27 in Singapore. This international exhibition is expected to be visited by about 6,000 people.
The award winner Dr. Benedek is furthermore honoured by being asked to speak at the Water Leader Summit to more than 140 invited top-class businessmen.
“I will now support and push the development of biogas technology with all my experience, means and strengths in order to contribute also in this field to a better environment.“ said Dr. Benedek to his employees of the newly acquired UTS Biogastechnik GmbH, which he is leading since end of October 2007 with a clear focus and a dynamic spirit. As in his previous company, the compliance with ethic and moral principles is equally very important to Dr. Benedek.
