EFMI joins organising committee of WoHIT conference

The World of Health IT Conference & Exhibition (WoHIT) is an ermmerging event in Europe. EFMI the European Federation for Medical Informatics has joined the Organizing Committee as a new member for the 2008 Conference. The conference will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark on Nov. 4-6, 2008.

The Organising Committee serves as the umbrella coordinating body for the conference and exhibition. Together with the Education Advisory Committee (EAC), the Organising Committee provides the final recommendations for the educational sessions, which will meet the needs of the target audience of end users, governments, ministries of health, academics and industries.

The EFMI supports healthcare informatics and all disciplines concerned with healthcare and informatics; 31 countries are now members of the organisation. Jacob Hofdijk, who will take over the EFMI presidency in May 2008, will represent the organisation on the WoHIT Organizing Committee.

The European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) was conceived at a meeting, assisted by the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organisation (WHO ), in Copenhagen in September 1976. The representatives of national Health/Medical Informatics societies from ten European countries signed a declaration of intent stating:

"The Federation shall be constituted as a nonprofit organisation concerned with the theory and practice of Information Science and Technology within Health and Health Science in a European context. We declare that the ten delegates here today from the ten national societies shall constitute the preliminary Council of the Federation which thus hereby exists."
Copenhagen, 11 September 1976.

Structure
The constitutional bodies of EFMI are

* The EFMI Council, a General Assembly of all members, officers and working group chair persons.
* The Board of officers, treasurer, vice presidents and president
* Working Groups organised by a chairperson (see also the EFMI Working Groups Menu section)

Objectives
The objectives of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) founded in 1976 are:

* To advance international co-operation and dissemination of information in Medical Informatics on a European basis;
* To promote high standards in the application of medical informatics;
* To promote research and development in medical informatics;
* To encourage high standards in education in medical informatics;
* To function as the autonomous European Regional Council of IMIA

Activities
All European countries are entitled to be represented in EFMI by a suitable Medical Informatics Society. The term medical informatics is used to include the whole spectrum of Healthcare Informatics and all disciplines concerned with Healthcare and Informatics.

The organisation operates with a minimum of bureaucratic overhead and each national society supports the Federation by sending and paying for a representative to participate in the decisions of the Federation's Council. Also, and again to reduce overhead, English has been adopted as the official language, although simultaneous translation is often provided for congresses in non-English speaking countries.

Countries
Currently, 31 countries have joined the Federation.
