Better Together, Better Future The 2025 Global 6G Conference Opens Grandly

From April 10 to 12, 2025, the 2025 Global 6G Conference, co-hosted by FuTURE Mobile Communication Forum (FuTURE Forum) and Purple Mountain Laboratories (PML) was held at Shangqinhuai International Cultural Exchange Center in Nanjing.

As a pivotal milestone in the development of 6G, 2025 is viewed by the industry as the inaugural year for the formulation of 6G standards. Significant progress in the advancement of global 6G standardization is expected to occur during this period. With the theme "Better Together, Better Future", the conference aims to promote global consensus on 6G standards and foster cross-sector collaboration to fully explore and create new value. Having been held for four consecutive years, the Global 6G Conference has been renamed "Global 6G Technology Conference," which reflects that it will expand its focus on future industrial ecosystems. The Conference is committed to accelerating the transformation of technological innovation into practical productivity and exploring the best way to help the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

Academician Wu Hequan noted that 6G must demonstrate its irreplaceability not only in scenarios beyond the reach of 5G and other wireless technologies but also in meeting fundamental consumer needs and industrial applications. Academician You Xiaohu pointed out that the 6G radio access network architecture is rapidly shifting from a base station-centered model to a user-centered one. He stressed the importance of breaking through traditional communication paradigms at both the architectural and theoretical levels to lay a solid foundation for ubiquitous intelligent connectivity.

Robert Schober, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, stated in a video speech that many IEEE members contributed cutting-edge ideas and the latest achievements through this 6G conference. Khaled Ben Letaief, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, pointed out that 6G will usher in the era of "Intelligent Connectivity among Everything," with the greatest transformation being the construction of AI-native radio access network. This is not only a revolution in network architecture but also a catalyst for the deep integration of communications, computing, and sensing, reshaping the future of radio communications.

At the opening ceremony, Fu Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of the FuTURE Mobile Communication Forum, released the "2025 White Paper on Mobile Communication," which focuses on key areas such as 6G key technologies, millimeter-wave and terahertz, digital low altitude, and internet of vehicles. She also systematically analyzed current development trends and challenges. Since the 4G era, the Forum has released annual white papers for 20 consecutive years. This year's release aims to offer the industry a systematic framework and technological roadmap at a time when the global standardization process is entering a critical stage.

To further fulfill its mission of leading the integration of technological and industrial innovation, Zijinshan Science and Technology City has developed a blueprint for building a "6G City." Tang Xiaonan, Deputy Director of Jiangning Development Zone, promoted initiatives in 6G technology breakthroughs, achievement transformation, and the construction plan for the "6G City," calling for broad participation in cultivating future industries led by 6G technologies.

As a pioneer in national strategic scientific and technological forces and 6G innovation, Purple Mountain Laboratories unveiled the world's first 6G field test network integrating communication, intelligence, and sensing. The facility conducts technology validation across six key 6G application scenarios, achieving a 10- to 100-fold increase in connectivity compared to 5G, along with high-precision target sensing. It also pioneered demonstration and pilot applications such as low-altitude inspection, logistics, and security, providing crucial support for China's continued advancement in 6G innovation and future industry development.

Leveraging the broad exchange and cooperation platform of the conference, Purple Mountain Laboratories signed agreements with CRSC Institute of Smart City Research & Design and GalaxySpace to jointly explore cutting-edge 6G applications in emergency communications and the low-altitude economy. The National University ICT Regional Technology Transfer Center (Jiangsu) signed agreements with China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile to jointly build industry-academia-research platforms focused on 6G and mobile intelligence, accelerating the translation of scientific research into real-world applications.

The conference attracted extensive participation from leading experts across academia, industry, and research sectors in China. During the conference, deep exchanges of ideas contributed valuable insights and outcomes. Academicians Wu Hequan, Liu Yunjie, You Xiaohu, Wu Jiangxing, Yin Hao, Mao Junfa, Cui Tiejun, Wang Huaimin, and Zhang Ping provided valuable advice and insights on 6G frontier directions and strategic planning. Industry leaders including Luan Xiaowei (Deputy General Manager of China Telecom), Hao Liqian (Deputy General Manager of China Unicom), and Wang Xiaoyun (Chief Scientist of China Mobile) also shared the latest thinking and progress in building 6G to higher standards.

As a globally recognized academic conference in the 6G field, the event gathered world-class experts and scholars from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Greece, Belgium, Portugal, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. The conference also invited the Chairman of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Working Group and representatives from renowned international research initiatives such as the EU Hexa-X-II Project, Finland's 6G Flagship Program, Japan's XGMF, and South Korea's 6G Forum. Two roundtable discussions were held on 6G technologies and standards, international cooperation, and industrial ecosystems. During the conference, the FuTURE Mobile Communication Forum officially launched two new working groups: Cell-Free Working Group and New Mid-Band (FR3) Working Group.
