The tricuspid is one of the four valves that controls blood flow in our heart. It is located on the right side, between the upper chambers (atrium) of our heart and the lower chambers (ventricle). It ensures blood flows in the right direction from the right ventricle down to the right atrium. The tricuspid has three flaps called leaflets, which open and close when blood flows through. Tricuspid valve disease is a term used to describe health conditions that affect tricuspid function. The main types include:

Tricuspid regurgitation: The valve leaks, or does not close tightly enough. This allows blood to leak in the opposite direction.

Tricuspid Stenosis - The valve leaflets are too stiff and can restrict blood flow.

The medical procedure of tricuspid valve repair and replacement is used to treat diseases that affect one of the four heart valves. It is usually better to repair a patient's heart valve than replace it with a prosthetic. Valve repair involves the surgeon altering the tissue or underlying structure of the mitral and tricuspid vales. An annuloplasty band or ring is used in nearly all valve repairs. It is a cloth-covered device implanted around or the annulus of the mitral valve or tricuspid. It supports the patient's mitral or tricuspid valve and brings the leaflets closer together to reduce leaks. This procedure can reduce symptoms and increase the survival rate of people with tricuspid regurgitation.

Tricuspid regurgitation is the most common reason for tricuspid repair. In the United States, 1.6 million people suffer from moderate to severe tricuspid reflux. In April 2021 Abbott announced that it had received CE Mark certification for its next generation TriClip Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Repair System. This is the first of its kind minimally invasive tricuspid valve repair device to be available in Europeto cure tricuspid regurgitation.
