"The Day On The Streets Of (DOTSO) - Kathmandu": the largest 24-hour Street Photography project achieved successfully in Kathmandu

On March 31, 2025, the streets of Kathmandu turned into a vibrant canvas as The Day On The Streets Of (DOTSO) marked another milestone in its global journey. This unique 24-hour photography initiative brought together 17 passionate street photographers, ranging from the ages of 15 to an inspiring 74, from around the globe, including 7 talented Nepali photographers! Together, they braved the chaos, colours, and challenges of Kathmandu to document its heartbeat.

Kathmandu: A City Like No Other

What set this year's edition apart was the kaleidoscopic blend of Kathmandu's culture and life. From the timeless charm of Thamel and the historic Basantapur Durbar Square to the bustling markets of Ason and Kalimati, and the serene sanctity of Pashupatinath Temple and Boudha Stupa-each location offered photographers a raw, unfiltered view of the city. Kathmandu posed its own challenges: navigating crowded markets, dodging narrow alleys, and contending with altitude-all while soaking in its majestic Himalayan backdrop.

Voices Behind the Lens

DOTSO's Director Kevin Unger was emotional while sharing his thoughts, "For the 4th time, DOTSO has completed a 24 hour project in an exotic locale. This time we chose Kathmandu, a place I've always wanted to see, and it was delivered! The people here are very warm and made shooting here a pleasure. Thank you Kathmandu, I hope to be back soon."

Abhishek Deb, DOTSO Administrator & Dais World's Director, expressed, "DOTSO Kathmandu will be remembered not only for its astonishing images but also for the camaraderie it fostered. Whether it was the 15-year-old or the 74-year-old -it's the passion for street photography that unified all of us. I congratulate team DOTSO, team Dais World, all the participants and the Nepali contingent in accomplishing this milestone event, with huge success."

DOTSO Administrator Dov Oron remarked, "Kathmandu sounded like a far away mystery. It stood up to all I expected, and much more. The beauty and the vibrance of the street, the holy places, and the most of all - the people. Kathmandu left a deep impression on my heart and mind, something I will cherish forever."

Building Bridges with Local Talent

The international team was warmly welcomed by the Nepali contingent of DOTSO. The local contingent reportedly organised a spirited interactive session on April 1st between few of the visiting and the local photographers at Bahadur Shah Baithak, Durbar Square-Patan, to celebrate shared creativity.

Overcoming Challenges with Grit and Joy

Despite the inevitable hurdles of street photography-unexpected weather, busy streets, and the unpredictability of capturing candid moments-the participants embraced each challenge with smiles and determination, turning DOTSO Kathmandu into a testament of their love for the craft.

What's Next for DOTSO?

With yet another extraordinary chapter added to its legacy, whispers of the next DOTSO city are already in the air. While no official announcements have been made, the world eagerly awaits the next destination where DOTSO will inspire and unite photographers once again.

About DOTSO

Kevin Unger expresses that he felt burnt out from more than 15 years of his photojournalism career. He felt it tiring being caught in the crossfire of war reporting and tired of a never changing narrative.

As he decided to put his cameras away for years, one of his photojournalist friends pushed him towards picking up the camera again to shoot street shots. As he picked up the camera again 4 years back, he never stopped again. He found his old passion for photography while doing street photography and he understood the therapeutic value it brought to his life. Now he was not setting his foot out on the streets with a preset story in mind and is free and in liberty to click anything. He believed to have found a way back to the camera.

He mentions that as a kid he was also vulnerable to substance abuse and he strongly believes that street photography as an art, discipline, and genre can help socially challenged kids to use this as a tool to get back to a normal life. DOTSO comes with a purpose to spread the art of street photography to everyone not only as an expression but also as a way to revive and rejuvenate.

Starting with Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Kolkata and now Kathmandu, DOTSO focuses on taking this awareness to every corner of the planet, one city at a time.
