Izuma Networks, a leader in edge computing and IoT device management, has joined SOAFEE (Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge) to advance scalable edge computing solutions for connected vehicles. This collaboration supports SOAFEE's mission to standardize cloud-native software deployment for vehicles, addressing the growing complexity of software in connected and autonomous vehicles. SOAFEE brings together industry leaders like ARM, Amazon, and General Motors to create a unified software framework for embedded edge systems.
Izuma Networks contributes its expertise in container technology, offering a platform for scalable and distributed deployment and management of containerized applications across cloud and edge environments. Izuma Cloud provides a unified system for large-scale, highly distributed edge workloads, leveraging Kubernetes APIs for compatibility with existing DevOps tools. Izuma Edge, an open-source stack, ensures efficient software delivery at the edge on any Linux distribution. This aligns with SOAFEE's architecture for embedded edge systems.
The automotive industry shipped over 74 million vehicles in 2024, according to ACEA data, with models like the Ford F-150 exceeding 140,000 units in North America alone. As vehicle software becomes more complex with frequent updates critical, automakers are adopting cloud-proven technologies like containerization for enhanced security and management. A Cloud Native Computing Foundation survey found that over 89% of organizations use Kubernetes to manage containers.

Managing large fleets or entire model series requires grouping vehicles into multiple edge-centric clusters, making management scalable across clusters essential. Izuma's partnership with SoftBank Corp. on NEDO's Post-5G Infrastructure Development Project focuses on scaling software for post-5G networks, complementing its role in SOAFEE by supporting large-scale, highly distributed edge deployments.
"We're excited to join SOAFEE and be part of this major transformation as vehicles leave the static firmware era and move to being continuously connected and updated devices.' said Ed Hemphill, CEO of Izuma Networks. 'Our work with partners like SoftBank on NEDO's Post-5G project is strengthening our ability scale to edge deployments in a unified way, and at unprecedented size, while still allowing modern DevOps tools and practices." SOAFEE aims to standardize software for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). With over a decade of experience managing edge networks for companies like Johnson Controls and Honeywell, Izuma Networks will provide reference implementations to help automakers adopt SOAFEE's architecture, accelerating secure vehicle-to-cloud solutions.
