Freshwater generators, or FWGs, convert saltwater into freshwater. They are often installed on ships and boats, which can provide a steady supply of fresh water while at sea. This is done through the process of distillation. The three main techniques to obtain freshwater from seawater are boiling, evaporation, and reverse osmosis (RO). Most marine vessels and industrial establishments produce freshwater either through evaporators or RO plants. In large desalination plants, the seawater is evaporated using steam from the thermal power station's steam circuit.

The top part of the FWG consists of an evaporator plate heat exchanger and a condenser plate heat exchanger. The condenser facilitates seawater circulation in a sealed system through the heat exchanger. On the other hand, the evaporator allows for hot water passage through a sealed system as well. However, the condenser and evaporator differ from conventional plate heat exchangers since both are not sealed. The gaskets are specially made to accommodate the evaporation of seawater from the evaporator plates and the condensation of fresh water on the condenser plates.
