"twentysixmiles" Mini-Series Begins Production in Hawaii in Mid-April
HONOLULU, HAWAII … March 7, 2008. twentysixmiles, a six-hour television mini-series from the executive producers of the hit television series “Flight 29 Down,” will begin production in mid-April in Hawaii. Casting by Jamie Rudolfsky of Jamie Rudolfsky Casting presently is underway in California and Hawaii.twentysixmiles is executive produced by Rann and Gina Watumull, and David and Shauna Jackson of Hawaii Film Partners the Honolulu-based film and television production company, and Rob Miller of Tower 17 Productions. Scott LeGrand is the producer, and Mike Petty and Kevin F. Guzowski are the writers. Showcase Entertainment will distribute twentysixmiles worldwide.
“We all fell in love with the scripts for this mini-series because of the interesting and witty characters, creative story lines, clever dialogue and great values,” says Rann Watumull.
“And with the success of our first TV series, “Flight 29 Down” which aired on NBC and currently airs on Discovery Kids and worldwide in close to 100 other countries, we just had to do this project,” adds David Jackson.
twentysixmiles is about Jack Kincaid, a successful businessman who was pretty good at figuring out life and was better at it than most people. But no one was sure how Jack, who had been the coolest guy in college, the free spirit who loved his motorcycle, music and his band called the Renegades, ultimately ended up as a workaholic. He was doing it all for his wife, his kids, for America -- or so he thought -- until his wife up and left, taking the kids to live on Catalina Island -- 26 miles off the California coast.
When Jack sets off for Catalina to regain his happiness, he re-teams with Sean Murphy, his former best friend and band mate -- a dreamer and schemer who is now the “Honorary Mayor” of the island and a guy who believes that cool is something you never lose. Together they begin to rebuild their dreams, get their band together again and rediscover what love, family, life and living is all about.
Also being cast are several teen roles. “There is a strong, youthful presence in our scripts,” says Rob Miler. “While the kids of Catalina Island surf, play music, go to school and everything else that teenagers do, the pressures of small town versus big city living plays out in their lives and in our stories.”
“Living on an island has a distinct feel and style for adults and kids, and music is a natural part of this island life,” says Shauna Jackson. “We'll allow everyone to escape his or her daily grind and come to the island with us, for one hour a week,” she concludes.
On filming the mini-series in Hawaii with the story set on California’s Catalina Island, Gina Watumull says, “Hawaii Film Partners is thrilled to take on the challenge of making Hawaii double for Catalina Island. While we will be doing backgrounds and second unit on Catalina, we hope that our Hawaii locations and style of filming will give the audience a seamless encounter.”
Rob Miller sees twentysixmiles as a personal story, albeit fantasy, that a wide audience will share and enjoy. Rob Miller and Gary “Griff” Griffith conceived the original idea for the show, with by Mike Petty and Kevin Guzowski writing the episodes. “Over the years I’ve owned and operated several fairly large companies. Unfortunately, stress was part of my job description. I found myself easing the tension by imagining my retirement: me strumming a guitar at an island beach bar, singing Jimmy Buffet songs and sipping margaritas,” says Rob Miller. “But my voice isn’t great, my guitar skills are limited, and I can’t play bass and sing at the same time. That’s when I realized by dream would be a better TV show than a part-time job because it really is a dream we all share: quitting our job, discovering the Renegade deep inside, and if you’re really lucky, getting the chance to stick it to the man.”
“We’re thrilled to work with Rob Miller and Tower 17 Productions because we share the same goal to create wonderful entertainment for the family with enduring positive values,” the Watumulls continue. “Together we are working very hard to bring a new paradigm to television and film, and that is to make first class productions outside of the network/studio system that can then be shown on networks and top stations around the world.
“I feel fortunate to have teamed up with Hawaii Film Partners to produce twentysixmiles, says Rob Miller. “From the very beginning, we shared a common vision with the story and the characters. While the character of Jack is very important to me, the kids in twentysixmiles have become the common denominator -- a perfect fit for our creative vision in exploring the issues and pressures that teens and their families are forced to deal with on a daily basis.”
