The film chronicles the extraordinary journey of Maurice Hunter, who played in Grand Slam tournaments five times and made history as the first African American in 30 years to win the Michigan Open. In 1979, at just 22 years old, Hunter defeated computer-ranked players from 16 states and 6 countries in a straight three-day competition without losing a single match to become the Men's Singles Champion to enthusiastic crowd cheers in Midland, Michigan.
"It has been emotional for us all in this journey uncovering professional sports records and data on Maurice Hunter which is supposed to be public information but was found buried offsite of the professional ITF, USTA and ATP player pages," shares Cherisse Wilson Goedhart, founder of CMG Company Films LLC. "The detective-like journey researcher David Kamisar and I undertook to uncover and verify these records against all odds provides new context about the tennis world of Black Americans during the 70s to 80s."
