The host material contains dopant ions, usually lanthanides such as erbium, ytterbium, or thulium, which are responsible for the upconversion process.

When UCNPs are excited by infrared or near-infrared light, multiple photon absorption and energy transfer processes occur within the nanocrystal lattice. These processes involve sequential absorption of low-energy photons followed by energy transfer steps, ultimately resulting in the emission of higher-energy visible or ultraviolet photons.
