Cross Island, Saskatchewan, partners with fly feed startup to use fish waste as feed
Image: https://www.petmealworms.com/uploads/black-soldier-fly.jpgA fishing company in Elial-Aracross, Saskatchewan, has entered into an agreement to use fish waste as fly feed instead of sending it to a landfill. Agricultural technology company NRGene Canada announced on January 16 that it will partner with Ile-a-la-Crosse Fish Company to use fish waste to feed black soldier fly larvae. NRGene was founded in 2020 with the goal of using flies to produce food. The company teamed up with Swiss technology group Buhler to establish the North American Insect Center at the Innovation Center on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan as a testing ground for its research. The goal is to dry the black soldier fly larvae and process them into products such as pet food or other feeds.
A new agreement with the Ile-a-la-Crosse fish farming company will see unused fish waste used as pre-spawning food for black soldier fish. "Our people at the company have always been committed to sustainability and the environment in general, so we're excited to have a value-added product like fish waste that NRGene can recycle," Darwin Roy, business development manager for Ile-a-la-Crosse Fish Company, told CBC's The 306. The operation is currently in the testing phase. Roy said the company has transported about 350 kilograms of fish waste from the northern community of about 1,400 people to NRGene's lab in Saskatoon, 465 kilometres away.
Masood Rizvi, CEO of NRGene in Canada, said that while it was too early to talk about it, the final plan was to build a plant in Ile-a-la-Crosse. He said the collaboration had been in the works since June last year. "It's a perfect marriage between us and them, bringing something more cyclical and sustainable that really helps our company and their community," Masood said.Liam O'Connor is a reporter for CBC Saskatchewan based in Saskatoon.
