Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is characterized by having two neutrons and one proton in its nucleus, compared to just one proton and no accompanying neutrons in regular hydrogen. The extra neutron in the nucleus of tritium makes it unstable, causing it to undergo a process called radioactive decay. During radioactive decay, one of the neutrons in the nucleus of tritium can be transformed into a proton through a process called beta decay. When tritium transitions to a more stable state (helium-3), the neutron is converted into a proton, emitting a low-energy beta particle.
The half-life of tritium is a defining characteristic of its use in a variety of applications. Half-life refers to the time it takes for half of a radioactive substance to decay into a more stable state. Tritium has a relatively short half-life of 12.3 years, meaning that it decays relatively quickly compared to some other radioactive substances. However, it is precisely because of tritium's short half-life that it is advantageous for practical applications, as it allows for predictable and controllable energy generation that is not affected by most environmental factors, giving tritium the unique ability to provide power in extreme environments. The small amount of energy released when tritium decays makes it uniquely useful and well suited for powering low-power devices and microelectronic devices through specially designed batteries, which led to the design of tritium batteries.
