Parental Involvement in Shaping the Future of Education - Anna

Anna Evans, a high school junior enrolled in an accredited homeschool program, exemplifies the themes discussed in this article. As someone who has lived in various parts of the United States and even overseas, Anna's diverse experiences have shaped her perspective on education, faith, and family values.
Education, the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next, is one of the most important components of a society. It is the first way to influence a new generation for a specific purpose. In order for a society to be great, its people must be strong. Strong people come from strong families. The only way to maintain strong families is to keep foundations laid on sound moral principles. These moral principles are instilled into young lives through education. The strength of a society can be measured by the quality of its education.

School students in the United States today straggle behind students in other countries. In fact, when the math proficiency of its students is considered, the United States falls into the lower 33% of industrialized nations. The following statistics have been reported by the National Assessment of Education Progress Test: of all fourth graders in America, 32% can read proficiently, 39% read below the basic level, and 35% are proficient or above proficient in math. In one school in Washington, D.C., 5% of students are at their grade level in reading, 1% of students are up to par in math, and 0% of students know what they are supposed to in science.

The United States' public education is tottering on the brink of failure. Leftist agendas have heavily infiltrated the classrooms, promoting the teaching of radical theories instead of classical subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Programs such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Outcome Based Education (OBE), are promoted as aids to help lagging students learn more and feel better about themselves. However, these programs actually discourage studious children to achieve and do not really help struggling students. DEI does away with awards, so students who do not earn them will not feel excluded. DEI also blocks "tracking," a method that allows students skilled in certain courses to advance to higher levels. DEI administers all students simplified courses, resulting in minimized accomplishment.4 OBE permits students to take failed examinations over and over, undermining students' motivation for improvement. Scholarships and waived tests for certain ethnic groups are more harmful than helpful because, when these people graduate university, they do not possess the necessary skills to perform well in their chosen fields. For example, how many people would trust a doctor who does not even know the basics of anatomy?

America was great when its people were educated. During the colonial period of the United States, children were educated at home. In the 1600s, English Puritans founded the first colleges and the first public school system in North America. The new education system was established by the Ole' Deluder Satan Act, which mandated towns of certain sizes to hire teachers or begin schools. Throughout the 1800s, the United States's people grew to be the most literate in the world. Most schools were run by the parents of students, but gradually, government-controlled public schools, supported by taxes, sprang up across the nation.7 These new schools took the responsibility of educating children from parents and transferred it to the state. These public schools would make it easier to implement new ideologies. In the 1900s, John Dewey, a college professor, began advocating that teachers allow students to practice "self-expression" in the classroom. Eventually, the teaching of moral absolutes and character forming in the classroom was replaced with humanist philosophies aimed at retraining society.

Despite the unfortunate decline in the United States' educational system, there are methods to improve the plight of the nation. Whenever possible, parents should vote on measures to increase their voice in the public school system. One of the ways to improve students' performance is to homeschool them. Many families, including liberal ones, are increasingly turning to homeschooling as an alternative to public education. Homeschooling allows parents to teach their children subjects and morals that correspond with chosen standards of living at home. In traditional homeschooling, curriculums can be chosen according to preference, and courses can be tailored to a students' learning needs. If a student is excellent in history, for instance, he can move to a higher level of study, but still be taught his grade level of math and English. Accredited homeschooling can offer advantages over traditional homeschooling, because it gives assurance students are being taught what they need to know and opens doors to colleges and universities that may be unfavorable to homeschoolers. Homeschooling can be done just about anywhere and anytime, and the coursework can be as rigorous or flexible as desired.

Children should learn standards and skills that will benefit their generation and the ones to come, not socialist agendas that are meant to weaken America's democracy. In order to strengthen our beloved nation, we need to maintain a healthy school system.
