U.S. steel imports in November 2024 - Highlights and Statistics

According to preliminary data released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States imported a total of 2.067 million tons of steel in November 2024, down 13.7% from October. In November, the United States' imports of semi-finished steel decreased by 14.4% month-on-month, accounting for 22.9% of total steel imports. The decline in semi-finished steel imports was due to Romania's suspension of billet shipments to the United States in November. In addition, Mexico and Brazil also significantly reduced their shipments of semi-finished steel in November.

In November, U.S. finished steel imports fell 13.5% from the previous month. Among the finished steel products imported by the United States in November, only a few varieties of imports increased month-on-month, among which the import volume of oil-specific pipes [https://www.lsdsteel.com/steel-pipe/]and pipeline pipes increased by 44.7% and 21.9% respectively. The decline in imports of hot-rolled sheets was mainly due to reduced imports from Japan and the Netherlands.U.S. imports of finished steel had an estimated market share of 21% in November.

From January to November 2024, the United States' steel imports increased by 2.5% year-on-year. Among them, the import volume of finished steel was 20.682 million tons, an increase of 3.0% year-on-year.The market share of finished steel imported by the United States from January to November 2024 is estimated to be 23%. Canada, Brazil and Mexico are the main sources of steel imports from January to November in the United States, with imports of 6.037 million tons, 4.384 million tons and 3.190 million tons, respectively, down 4.9%, up 21.6% and down 18.0% year-on-year.In addition, from January to November, the United States' steel imports from South Korea increased by 9.8%; steel imports from Japan decreased slightly by 0.5%; steel imports from Germany increased by 4.4%; imports from China decreased sharply by 21.4% year-on-year.
