Groundbreaking Partnerships Formalized to Build Equity Across San Diego County

Founder Shawn McClondon with Supervisors Monica Montgomery-Steppe, Terra Lawson-Remer and SCP's Laurel Smith and Susie Saladino
The Sister Cities Project is making history with formal partnerships between affluent and underserved communities through proclamations issued by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. These proclamations, a first of their kind, represent a transformative model for fostering equity, understanding, and collaboration that can inspire communities nationwide.
A central part of this initiative is the development of an Equity Ecosystem, an innovative framework that connects communities to resources, programs, and support systems designed to create sustainable change. The Equity Ecosystem provides practical tools to address systemic inequities and ensure that progress is inclusive and lasting.
"Imagine communities that have rarely worked together coming together to create something transformative," said Shawn McClondon, Founder and CEO of Sister Cities Project. "This isn't just about partnerships-it's about creating an Equity Ecosystem that provides a path to real unity and shared prosperity."
Launched in 2020 amidst a nationwide reckoning on race, the Sister Cities Project, founded by Shawn McClondon, fosters connections between communities with vastly different resources and histories, primarily focusing on Black and White populations. The initiative promotes authentic relationships and mutual respect, laying the groundwork for a more equitable future.
"This moment is not just about recognition-it's about action," McClondon added. "The Equity Ecosystem we're building will show how intentional collaboration can address disparities, bridge divides, and create a model for others to follow."
The proclamations celebrate the organization's vision and commitment to fostering economic and cultural exchange while challenging systemic barriers. As these partnerships evolve, the Equity Ecosystem will serve as a cornerstone for scalable solutions, ensuring long-term impact across San Diego County and beyond.
