In a city often overshadowed by violence, a drag performer named Bubblez is quietly reshaping lives. Known offstage as Dwayne Dillon, Bubblez is a pageant-winning drag queen and skilled seamstress who mentors more than 20 young adults in New Orleans, offering them not just safety, but a sense of belonging and the opportunity to express themselves in ways many have never experienced.

An upcoming documentary, BUBBLEZ: Love, Drag, & The Power of Family [https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/daydreampictures/bubblez-love-drag-and-the-power-of-family], chronicles Dillon's efforts to create a support system for those often overlooked in society. Against the backdrop of a city grappling with gun violence and the erosion of safe spaces for Black drag performers, the film explores themes of resilience, chosen family, and the quest for acceptance.

Dillon's dual role as a mentor to his drag family and a father to his teenage daughter adds depth to the story. After years apart, he and his daughter are working to rebuild their relationship while navigating the challenges of suddenly living together. For Dillon, this dynamic underscores his broader mission: to guide others, whether through parenting, mentorship, or his work in the drag community.

"I feel like I'm on a mission to help my kids, both chosen and biological," says Dillon. "Until I've done everything I can for them, I'm not done."

The documentary highlights not only the struggles of the young people he mentors but also their victories. For many, Dillon's guidance has provided the opportunity to compete in national drag pageants - offering them their first glimpse beyond the boundaries of their neighborhoods. At the same time, the film reflects on the closure of Black drag bars in New Orleans, spaces that were once vital for LGBTQ+ expression and community building.

Bubblez's work extends beyond mentorship. He is also a co-producer of the documentary, ensuring the film authentically reflects his life and work. An original soundtrack is being developed as part of the project, featuring Grammy-winning artists as well as Dillon and his daughter collaborating on songs.

In June 2025, the production will host a three-day Bubblez Drag & Music Celebration in New Orleans to raise funds for the film. The event will include live performances by Bubblez and his community, with some performances filmed for the documentary's finale. Supporters of the project can join the Kickstarter campaign for the chance to participate in the celebration as VIPs or backstage guests.

The film is being produced by Daydream Pictures, an independent production company specializing in authentic storytelling. Founded by Jacquelyn Shulman, a veteran of television and film production, Daydream Pictures aims to shed light on stories that foster connection and understanding.

With less than two weeks remaining to meet their Kickstarter goal, the filmmakers are calling on supporters to help bring this project to life. The campaign emphasizes that this is not just a film about drag - it's a film about creating spaces where everyone can feel seen and valued.
