Maxim Ride-Hailing Service holds road safety lessons in South Africa's schools

In light of the celebration of Children's Day, Maxim: Ride-Hailing & Delivery Service met with students of schools in Bloemfontein and Cape Town in a series of road safety talks. Some of the events were held jointly with representatives of state authorities.

In Bloemfontein, the campaign was joined by officials from the South African Police Service, Mangaung Police Station, Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, and Lengau Traffic Department. The activities took place in three schools (Maboeana Intermediate, Gonyana Primary School and Nozala Intermediate School) and sought to teach children aged between 7 and 14 about the importance of abiding by road safety rules. All participants received visual aids in the form of road-safety-themed colouring books, specially designed and created by Maxim for this educational program.

"We approached transportation authorities and the police with our idea of the events for school students, and they supported the initiative. This program was designed as part of Maxim's social responsibility effort. As a participant of the transportation industry, we believe that it's our responsibility to improve road safety and also teach these values to the younger generation," said Lemphane Lesoli, the head of Maxim Bloemfontein.

"As representatives of the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, we are tasked with educating all road traffic participants, especially school kids, because they are the most vulnerable group. We teach them about how they should behave on our dangerous roads, how the traffic lights work and how to use pedestrian crossings. And we are glad that businesses like Maxim are also starting to get involved in such activities," said a representative of the road safety directorate.

In Cape Town's Zonnebloem Primary School for Boys, a Maxim team in collaboration with Waheebah Leonard, the founder of SoundMind Coaching, held a conversation with students, addressing not only road safety rules, but also the importance of mental wellbeing.

"It was a fantastic initiative to speak to primary school children about mental health, raising their awareness about this crucial topic. During the talk, we shared tips on how they can identify mental health challenges and cope with them, and encouraged them to speak up if they are ever feeling unwell. These conversations are key to helping them understand that it is okay not to be okay, and it is also okay to reach out and ask for help," said Waheebah Leonard.

All the students who participated in the events received colouring books as gifts. Their plot follows a character helping the young readers learn basic road safety rules; this game-like format helps children learn and understand the information more efficiently. This initiative saw a lot of support among teachers who found it quite useful, and the students swung into action and immersed themselves in learning the rules immediately.

Maxim produced a total of 3,000 colouring books, some of which are going to be used for similar events in the future, including by representatives of transportation authorities.
