Use a mobile phone to monitor air quality at any time-Students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen work together to innovate and develop an environmental protection "magic tool"
Recently, high school student Min Chang Jordan Ren was interviewed by China Southern Media. The details of the interview are as follows:Air quality detection can be achieved without physical sensor. How can we quickly understand current air quality and provide timely health warnings? In this regard, students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen have jointly created an environmental protection "magic tool" that can quickly understand the air quality around you by taking a photo with a mobile phone.

Intelligent innovation, one-click to know whether the air is "good" or "bad"
Min Chang Jordan Ren is an intern at the DeepBit Lab of the Chinese University of Hong Kong ("CUHK"), Shenzhen. As a high school student, the boy is a little shy. But when talking about his projects, Jordan speaks very clearly.
"The full name of the software we created is AirQ AI, an air quality monitoring application," Jordan Ren said. He introduced that the project was developed together with seniors from the Shenzhen DeepBit Lab of CUHK. "When I proposed this idea, I didn't expect to receive strong support from the seniors. We worked together to develop and produce this app."
What makes the app unique is that it uses photos taken by a phone to analyze air quality, rather than relying on expensive sensors.
"Air quality monitoring often requires sophisticated instruments, and the equipment costs are relatively high. In developing countries and poor areas, monitoring equipment is unaffordable. Now through our app, users can understand air quality in real time, helping them better arrange their daily activities and protect their health." Jordan Ren introduced that his inspiration for developing the software came from his concern for environmental protection.
"Just take a photo and upload it to our app. Through the analysis of the large model, you can know the air quality level nearby." Jordan Ren opened the mobile phone app for a demonstration. Through the demonstration, you can clearly see that the current air quality index is divided into six levels: good, moderate, sensitive, unhealthy, very unhealthy, and dangerous.
Create a better life and make science and technology accessible to the public
"Jordan Ren is a student with great perseverance and ideas." Team partner Wang Qin, a doctoral student at the CUHK Shenzhen Campus, said that developing this app was not as easy as imagined. Especially in terms of data collection and processing, there were many challenges.
In order to enable the model to accurately judge the air quality, Jordan collected a large amount of image data and used ResNet-50 for training and optimization. Through his efforts, this app has made breakthroughs in accuracy and practicality, and has been successfully listed on relevant application markets for users to download and use.
Jordan Ren said that the reason for choosing the ResNet model is that it can extract visual features that indicate air quality, such as the presence of fog, smoke, or a clear sky. "This is the best model choice we have tried. Through more data training, the software will continue to iterate to achieve more accurate identification of air quality." Jordan said.
"Interest is the best teacher." During the conversation with Jordan Ren, it is not difficult to see that he is a person who is committed to using technology to create a better life.
Jordan Ren's environmental awareness was inspired by his concern for global air pollution. At the same time, he believes that technology can improve environmental problems and enhance people's quality of life. Jordan hopes to raise public awareness of air pollution through his own efforts and contribute to improving air quality worldwide. In the future, Jordan plans to continue to delve deeper into the field of artificial intelligence, further expand his knowledge and skills, and create more technical solutions that can benefit society.
About AirQ AI
AirQ AI is an innovative platform that leverages camera-based image analysis to monitor real-time air quality, especially for underdeveloped regions lacking physical sensor infrastructure. By providing accurate and accessible air quality data, AirQ AI empowers communities to make informed health decisions and take proactive measures against pollution, even in areas where traditional monitoring systems are unavailable.
