The World's First Elephant with a Prosthetic Leg Turns 19

The World's First Elephant with a Prosthetic Leg Turns 19

Chiang Mai, Thailand - November 5, 2024 - Elephant Parade is proud to honor the remarkable story of Mosha, an inspiring elephant who turns 19 this year. Mosha became the world's first elephant to receive a prosthetic leg after she lost her limb to a landmine as a young calf, marking a groundbreaking moment in animal care and rehabilitation.

Friends of the Asian Elephant Hospital: A Lifeline for Injured Elephants

Mosha's journey began when she was only seven months old, wandering through the forests of Thailand when a landmine explosion caused her life-altering injury. Through the dedicated care of Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) Hospital, Mosha was fitted with a custom prosthetic leg, enabling her to walk again. Her story of resilience and recovery has inspired Elephant Parade's mission and has captured the hearts of people worldwide.

"Mosha's story highlights the resilience of elephants and the importance of focused conservation efforts," said René de Wit, Managing Director of Elephant Parade. "She's become a symbol for the work we do, reminding us of the challenges these animals face and the impact we can have when we come together to support them."

Friends of the Asian Elephant, the first hospital dedicated to elephants in Thailand, provides Mosha and other injured elephants with essential medical care, supported in part by donations from Elephant Parade. Elephant Parade's Mosha-inspired elephant statue pays tribute to her journey, with proceeds going towards conservation efforts that ensure a future for Asia's elephants.

Mosha's legacy goes beyond her individual story, shedding light on the plight of elephants across Asia. By supporting organizations like Friends of the Asian Elephant through initiatives like Elephant Parade, people worldwide can contribute to the mission of protecting and preserving these gentle giants.
