JMA Pilani Celebrates International Day of the Girl Child

Investing in girls is both the right thing to do, and the smart thing to do. It has a powerful ripple effect across all areas of development, and reaches forward to future generations.

An investment in realizing the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability. The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders.

It is scary to hear from the latest report by Save the Children that one girl under 15 is married every seven seconds with girls as young as 10 married off - often to much older men - in countries which include not only Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia but also India. Further, UNICEF estimates the number of women married in childhood will grow from 700 million today to around 950 million by 2030. Child marriage has to be stopped at any cost.

On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl is based on the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. The slogan is: Girls’ Progress equals Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls. There is no doubt that the well being, human rights and empowerment of the world’s 1.1 billion girls are central to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

JMA Pilani which has a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international importance organized a function to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on October 9, 2016 which also coincides with Vijaya Dashami celebrations. Miss Monika Sharma Class X student of JMA Pilani read out the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon‘s message to the assembled children and the girls took a solemn resolve to be dreamers, performers and achievers in coming times.
