Benefit Concert for Historic Gloria Dei (Olde Swedes') Preservation Corporation on Friday, October 4th Highlights Fall Season for The Jazz Sanctuary

Benefit Concert for Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corp. Friday, October 4 Highlights Fall Season for The Jazz Sanctuary
Celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corp. as well as the launch of the Gloria Dei "Graveyard App", this special benefit event, which begins at 6 p.m., includes music from The Jazz Sanctuary Trio, featuring Stephen Kleinman (guitar), Grant MacAvoy (drums) and Alan Segal (bass). In addition to the music, Friday evening's event features graveyard tours, gourmet food, a silent auction and a wine tasting contest. Tickets are $20, with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting the preservation and restoration of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church and its graveyard. Tickets are available online at https://preserveoldswedes.org/event/app-launch-party/.
Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church is a National Historic Site. The church was established on Tinicum Island in 1646, 36 years before the founding of Pennsylvania. The congregation relocated to its present location in 1677, using a temporary structure as a house of worship. It was replaced by a brick church building in 1700, which still stands today. The graveyard next to the church has been in continuous use for over 340 years.
The property is owned and operated by the Corporation of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church, an Episcopal congregation. The Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corporation, a non-profit organization which operates independently from the church, was formed in 2013 with a mission to fund, support, and supervise the restoration and renovation of the buildings, grounds, and churchyard.
Friday's event is just one of three performances slated for The Jazz Sanctuary this month, with more to come this Fall season.
"The requests for gigs are coming in to me faster than I can book them," said Segal, the founder and Executive Director of The Jazz Sanctuary. "It's a wonderful time to be a musician, or at least to be a member of The Jazz Sanctuary bands. We had eight gigs in September, and what dates they were. Outstanding audiences attended our events which makes playing music all the better. Thanks to our audiences for their support, and we have three great events on the slate for October, including this Friday's benefit for our "home" court, Gloria Dei."
The Jazz Sanctuary has performed over 835 live events in the Greater Philadelphia region, at churches, community centers, senior residences, rehabilitation centers and other venues, most free of charge to the attendees.
With three concerts on the calendar in October, the organization that Segal started in gratitude to his friends, family and community following his recovery and rehabilitation from brain surgery continues to bring magical performances by gifted musicians to audiences throughout Philadelphia and its neighboring suburbs.
In addition to Friday's benefit, October's schedule for The Jazz Sanctuary includes:
• Thursday, Oct. 10 at Trinity Episcopal Church (Routes 202 & 413, Buckingham, PA 18912). An evening featuring The Jazz Sanctuary's always-popular "Jazz & Joe," with live music, coffee and treats begins at 7:30 p.m. and features The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet: James Dell'Orefice (piano), Eddie Etkins (saxophone), Leon Jordan Sr. (drums), Alan Segal (bass) and Randy Sutin (vibes/percussion). Admission to the concert is free of charge.
• Thursday, Oct. 26 at Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Episcopal Church (8 Christian St., Philadelphia, PA 19147). A two-hour evening of "Jazz & Joe" begins at 7:30 p.m. and features The Jazz Sanctuary Quintet: James Dell'Orefice (piano), Eddie Etkins (saxophone), Leon Jordan Sr. (drums), Alan Segal (bass) and Randy Sutin (vibes/percussion). Admission to the concert is free of charge.
Since its founding by Segal in 2011, The Jazz Sanctuary has performed at charitable events in the five-county area for organizations which include Friendship Circle, Cradle of Hope, Ronald McDonald House, Interfaith Hospital Center of the Main Line and Council on Brain Injury and Re-Med golf outing and therapy sessions.
Funding for The Jazz Sanctuary comes from individual donors as well as sponsors, including Compass Ion Advisors, Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, Quantum Think and DMG Global.
