Black in Marine Science Welcomes Ando Rabearisoa as UC Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA - Sep 19, 2024 - Black in Marine Science (BIMS) [https://www.blackinmarinescience.org/] is thrilled to announce the onboarding of Ando Rabearisoa as a UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) BIMS Scholar. Rabearisoa, a Ph.D. student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a Designated Emphasis on Coastal Science and Policy at UCSC, has been recognized by the Network of Women in Marine Science for her outstanding work in marine conservation.

"Ando is a passionate and dedicated conservationist whose research and advocacy align perfectly with BIMS' mission," said Dr. Camille Gaynus, Chief Science Officer of BIMS. "We are excited to support her work and provide her with opportunities to connect with other Black marine scientists and leaders in the field."

Rabearisoa's research focuses on marine ecosystem conservation in Madagascar, with a specialization in community-based marine conservation efforts. She is committed to finding integrated solutions that promote both social development and natural resource management. Her passion for science communication and her dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable marine science field make her a valuable addition to the BIMS community.

Earlier this summer, Rabearisoa demonstrated her leadership and initiative by securing $10,000 in funding to conduct a BioBlitz at Pillar Point in collaboration with BIMS and UCSC. This event will contribute to vital research and conservation efforts while also promoting community engagement and environmental awareness.

"I am honored to be a part of the BIMS family," said Rabearisoa. "I am excited to collaborate with other BIMS scholars and professionals, learn from their experiences, and contribute to BIMS' mission of celebrating Black marine scientists and inspiring the next generation of scientific leaders."

BIMS is proud to support Rabearisoa's research and advocacy and looks forward to her continued contributions to the marine science community.
