Fascination cycling tours on the lower Saar

The Saar is an insider tip for cyclists. Well-developed cycle paths lead along the idyllic river through fascinating natural landscapes. The most beautiful section runs from the mouth of the Saar into the Moselle near Konz, along the Old Saar from Hamm to Schoden, past the enchanting Saarburg to the Saar Loop behind Mettlach. Let's start our fantastic cycle tour at the mouth of the Saar. A few kilometers after Konz, we turn left at Hamm to the Alte Saar, straight ahead runs the Saar Canal, which was built for shipping. On the right-hand side, we experience the old wild river with shallows and bird islands, enjoying untouched nature and wide flower meadows. Only the cycle path is newly asphalted, smooth and fantastically rideable.

After five kilometers, steep vineyards appear and only connoisseurs know that the wine that grows here on blue Devonian slate is a special Riesling, one of the best white wines in the world. Due to the cooler location compared to the Moselle, the grapes here can ripen on the vine until November. We arrive in Kanzem and have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Von Othegraven winery, owned by Günther Jauch. We then continue along the Alte Saar past Wiltingen, where the world-famous winegrower and German "wine pope" Egon Müller cultivates the most expensive white wine in the world. Shortly behind it, the modern cube-shaped building of the famous Van Volxem winery sits enthroned in the vineyards. From the lock at Schoden, it is only a few kilometers to the romantic little town of Saarburg. There, a waterfall falls a spectacular ten meters into the depths at the market square.

19 kilometers up the Saar lies Mettlach, known as the headquarters of the ceramics manufacturer Villeroy & Boch. The Old Abbey, the Old Tower, the oldest preserved sacred building in Saarland, and modern works of art in the abbey park are well known. The highlight of this extraordinary journey is the ride past Mettlach along the impressive Saar Loop, Saarland's landmark. Along the cycle path, a path leads up to a platform that offers a magnificent view of the natural spectacle.
