FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Flush Gallery Presents Moral Injury
[Manhattan, New York. August 22nd, 2024 - August 29th, 2024 ] - Flush is thrilled to announce the opening of Moral Injury, featuring 14 artists from various backgrounds.

Curated by Elle Gillette, the exhibition Moral Injury explores the diverse perspectives and techniques of artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Drawing upon Susan Sontag's seminal work, Regarding the Pain of Others, the exhibition examines the portrayal of suffering and conflict in our image-saturated era. Sontag's critique of observing others' pain from a position of safety and privilege, extended into the digital age, prompts us to reflect on how we engage with these images without becoming passive observers.

Moral Injury addresses psychological, spiritual, and emotional harm that arises from exposure to actions or events that conflict with one's moral beliefs. This exhibition aims to counteract numbness and apathy by offering a different perspective on suffering. Each work reflects the artist's unique experience of suffering, emphasizing that form is not a passive reception but an active method of processing pain and making meaning.

By delving into how pain and suffering are represented through various forms and practices, Moral Injury challenges viewers to confront their responses and the ethics of depicting suffering. The exhibition invites a reflective engagement with artworks from diverse cultural and historical contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of how suffering is portrayed and perceived.

How do we continue to care for what we do not live through and witness with our own eyes? This question frames our exploration, urging viewers to examine their own roles in engaging with the pain of others.

The opening reception will be held on August 22nd, 2024 from 6-8pm, with many of the featured artists in attendance. This event is open to the public.

The exhibition is free and open to the public by appointment ONLY. For more information, please visit flushgallery.cargo.site or contact flushgallery@gmail.com.

The exhibition will be on display from August 22nd to August 29th at Hercules Art Studio, located at 25 Park Place in Tribeca. Proceeds from the submissions and zine purchases will go towards the INARA Rapid Gaza Relief Fund.

Basharat Ali Syed (b. 1996, Kashmir) is a New York-based artist who works at the intersection of installation, video, drawing, and sculpture. He employs 3D-printed objects, machine outputs, and diverse imaging technologies within an interdisciplinary framework to examine volatile narratives
surrounding disinheritance, delineation of borders, and bonds of mysticism. His practice systematically explores the antecedents of political and spiritual dissonance through a transnational lens.

Erin O'Flynn is an artist who uses sculpture, photography and video to reorient our relationship to how histories accumulate, often unseen, in our environments.

Gia Abucejo is a Filipino-american interdisciplinary artist working primarily across film & video, installation, photography, and text. In her work, she investigates somatic and cognitive perceptions of the outer world. She finds herself drawn to the body's constructed attachment to identity, and often explores its intersections with transformation, location, fantasy, and technology.

William Broich was born and raised in Sag Harbor, he is an artist and printmaker currently working in the Hamptons. William often constructs his images in a very loose and automatic style. William finds inspiration in the western occult tradition, often referring to his art as "Magickal pentacles, that are an extension of the will." Woodcut, monotype, and intaglio are his main areas of concentration, but William likes to branch out into sculpture as well.

Monica Tiulescu is a Connecticut-based New York City-raised artist and educator. She has taught architecture design, art, and digital media since 2000 at both high school and college levels. Daliah Ammar B. 1995 Philadelphia PA. Palestinian-American. BFA 2017, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. MFA 2022, Pratt Institute of Art.

Noah Tavlin (b. Philadelphia 1992) is a multimedia artist who observes the interlocking contradictions of absurdity, tragedy, and joy that are contained within images and objects from everyday life. With naive, deadpan curiosity, working primarily in drawing, collage, and printing (as well as photography, video, and songwriting), he identifies the familiar strangeness of our culture.

Delia Cadman (they/them), is a Brooklyn based interdisciplinary sculptor and arts educator. Delia graduated from Cooper Union in 2021 with a BFA in art. Their practice is deeply influenced by having grown up in a theatrical community in the historic red light district of Hell's Kitchen on the West side of Manhattan, New York. Drawing on this grounding as a means, as well as a range of other urban and arcane references (including but not limited to Shaker craft, the history of bohemianism in New York's artist communities, the monuments of Greenwood Cemetery, mysticism, anarchism and Dada), Delia investigates the relationship between the concrete body and the abstract and immaterial stratifications of the spirit and of power. In this process, they mobilize a theatrical sensibility informed by sets, props and peep shows in a way that is simultaneously severe and cheeky - prioritizing the aspect of play within the philosophical explorations and thought experiments which constitute their studio practice.

Daniel Pravit Fethke is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator from New York's Hudson Valley. He has exhibited work internationally in Bangkok, Berlin, Barcelona, and domestically at the Yale School of Art, Recess Art Space, and the Knockdown Center. Daniel was a resident at the Wassaic Project (2024), Woodstock-Byrdcliffe Guild (2024), and will be a Culinary Resident at the Ox-Bow School of Art (2024-25). Teaching is a central part of his practice, and Daniel regularly facilitates workshops, cooking classes, and creative gatherings that center food and recipes as ways to explore identity and culture.

Noormah Jamal is a multidisciplinary artist born in Peshawar, Pakistan, currently based in Brooklyn, New York.

Sara Zielinski is an artist, activist, and educator based in Brooklyn. Zielinski incorporates printmaking, drawing, text, video, and sewing into her work, often combining several techniques to create immersive environments. She has organized projects with artists and curated exhibitions in Chicago and New York. She interviewed artists for The Huffington Post from 2015 to 2017.

About Flush Gallery:
Flush is an independent artist-run gallery for *emerging* artists. Flush plays off the idea of a sudden rush of intense emotion. It also is a pun-the original space of the first show which took place in Elle's bathroom in the East Village. We exist to curate shows from the artist's perspective- at Flush, we're all about site-specific installations. Whether it's a classic white box gallery, the public loos of Tompkins Square, or the Guggenheim Museum's 4th-floor restroom, we're intrigued by the interplay between art and its surroundings.
Our goal with Flush is to have a complete immersive experience with art in its setting. We prioritize the art, not what goes in the pocket $$$.

About Hercules Art Studio:
The Hercules Art|Studio Program was co-founded by Claire Weisz and Andrea Woodner to encourage and enable talented emerging artists to pursue their careers in New York. It provides seven subsidized private work studios, shared exhibition and meeting spaces, and full amenities to selected artists on a two year basis.
