Banzha Culture Experience Center

The exhibition at the Banzha Culture Experience Center is centered around the concept of the Banzha, with the logical progression of "Banzha-Customs-Town" as its main narrative. It recreates the historical scene where Banzhas were constructed due to the canal, customs were established because of the Banzhas, and towns flourished around these customs.

In October 2014, during the construction of the Banzha Style Street project, a large number of stone slabs were discovered underground. After the Huai'an City Museum conducted tracking surveys and investigations, with the expansion of the exposed area, it was determined that it was a Ming Dynasty water gate and the main river of Qingjiangpu based on its shape, direction, and gate slot.

Banzha Culture Experience Center Exhibition Hall

The Nanjing Museum and the Huai'an City Cultural Heritage Protection and Archaeological Research Institute conducted archaeological excavations on the site for 10 months. A total of five types of ruins were discovered, including one water gate, one ancient river, one wharf, two embankments, and rows of building foundations.

In October 2020, construction began on the Banzha Site Park to systematically protect and display the site's heritage. The water gates were preserved with open-air water protection, while the remaining parts were backfilled and restored to their original state. The ground structures, including the Sanyuan Palace, the customs flagpole, and its base, were also restored to ensure the overall aesthetic harmony of the site. During the park's construction, two Ming Dynasty sunken ships discovered within the ancient river channel of the Banzha Site were excavated and preserved.

The Banzha Culture Experience Center at the Grand Canal Banzha Site Park covers an area of approximately 10,000 square meters. The overall architectural design integrates the concept of "the natural undulations of the earth," aiming to minimize visual and spatial interference with the Banzha site and other historical remnants. At the same time, the design creates a smoothly flowing, visually pleasing exhibition and landscape space.
