Alexandria, VA and Flat Rock, NC - Acclaimed writer and visual journalist Arielle Emmett, Ph.D., is proud to announce that her dystopian science fiction novel, The Logoharp: A Cyborg Novel of China and America in the Year 2121, has been honored as Literary Titan's Gold Book Award winner for Fiction. In July, Emmett's novel was also named Finalist in the category of Science Fiction: Cyberpunk at the 2024 American Fiction Awards sponsored by American Book Fest.
Both citations place The Logoharp among an esteemed group of literary works honored by multiple reviewing agencies. Literary Titan is an organization of professional writers, editors and professors who are passionate about the written word, reviewing and providing outreach to readers of both fiction and non-fiction books since 2013. American Book Fest, now in its 7th year, celebrates the finest works in over 70 genre-specific categories, acknowledging outstanding titles published between 2022 and 2024.
"I'm thrilled that my work is now honored by these two wonderful organizations," Emmett said. "The Logoharp began as an outline after teaching and reporting from Beijing in 2012. It's the culmination of years of research and reporting from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and most recently, Nairobi. It's been a long, arduous process of introspection and rewrites to shape this narrative into reality."
Emmett's novel introduces Naomi, a genetically enhanced cyborg and 'Reverse Journalist' who foresees and reports the future for China in the 22nd century. Her narrative explores themes of AI-driven propaganda, political power, and personal rebellion, resonating deeply with contemporary issues. According to Literary Titan, which gave The Logoharp a 5-star rating, "The narrative echoes the dystopian tones of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World...In Naomi's reality, the interplay between media and truth creates a landscape both intriguing and terrifying."
Publishers Weekly Booklife also reviewed The Logoharp , awarding it a top Editor's Pick: "Smart, startling sci-fi debut exploring next century's media and disinformation....Young Naomi-an Ameriguan from Michigania born with a hole in her heart and a reputed gift for prescience-is augmented and trained by the Chinese and Ameriguan Singing Directorate to take in and evaluate information from countless sources, in every language, plus 'Aeolian vibes' and 'both wisdom and warning from unidentified sources in Nature and the Divine.'
"Drawing from their 'Logoharps,' RJs report the truth of probable outcomes, scripting events to glorify and sustain the health of the Party and its constituents," PW Booklife continues. "A plot eventually kicks in, involving a coverup, a Human Recycling program, orders to engineer the downfall of an 'algorithmic imposter,' and a surprise from Naomi's past. All of this is gratifyingly twisty, with conflicts extrapolated from our present with rare conceptual rigor, but the richness of imagination and moral inquiry take priority over narrative momentum. Still, readers of thoughtful SF will find revelations on every page."
