The iCool isothermal bags – new freedom for polyarthritis patients

A few years ago, MedActiv started developing solutions for the transport of fragile medications so that those suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, polyarthritis or multiple sclerosis could travel with their medication. Two brothers in France started the business after one of their medications was frozen in a hotel by accident. Diseases that make them prisoners of their medication affect about 1.4 million people in the UK. MedActiv has become their partner with solutions that help them to travel while knowing that their medication is kept at exactly the right temperature.

For people that are using Anti-TNF medications for polyarthritis (Cimzia®, Orencia®, Enbrel, Humira, Simponi, etc), MedActiv has developed the iCool Weekender (12 hours), the iCool Prestige (24 hours) and iCool MediCube (36 hours). With these dedicated bags, polyarthritis patients will be able to travel anywhere, anytime, knowing that their medication is kept at exactly the right temperature between 2 and 8°C.

A simple innovation that radically changes the performance of a product

The iCool bags are padded with isolating materials in which are placed frozen gel packs. The MedActiv Gel Pack is made with a specially formulated polymer that stays frozen twice as long as a traditional pack and that does not “sweat” while unfreezing. These innovations, while appearing minor, allow MedActiv to keep the medication between 2 and 8°C for up to 36 hours, which is a record for this kind of bag.

The iCool bags are suitable for all types of fragile medications but are particularly well suited for polyarthritis injection pens (Cimzia, Enbrel, Humira, Simponi®, Orencia®, etc.). If these drugs are exposed to temperatures above 8°C, they are damaged and rapidly lose their effectiveness. The perfect storage temperature for these drugs is between 2 and 8°C and they should never be frozen. These are drugs that are particularly expensive and fragile. This handicaps people with polyarthritis and limits their movements. The iCool bags give users the freedom to travel and choose their destination. They are lightweight, practical, discreet, and elegant and allow the transport of fragile medication safely during long plane trips.

For the new generations of iCool bags, a team of engineers worked with Uwe and Olaf DIEGEL, creators of MedActiv, to rethink traditional solutions for the transport of fragile medication. “As a daily user of thermo-sensitive medications, I was systematically disappointed by the many products I bought through traditional networks. It was for me obvious that the people who designed the bags were not themselves users of medication and did not understand my constraints. So we went back to the drawing board and redesigned the bags so that they would be perfect for us. The iCool bags are designed by patients for patients,” says Dr Diegel, one of the two brothers who founded MedActiv.

Exceeding your expectations for the transport and storage of medications

For Uwe DIEGEL, creator of MedActiv, the company represents a personal investment. "In 2003, my brother almost died following an incident where his medication was accidentally frozen in a hotel. So I started this company because of reasons that are more of a personal nature than just business. MedActiv is for me the ultimate expression of innovation at the service of healthcare. If the MedActiv products are so popular, it is because they are designed by patients for patients and because we speak directly with users of the medications to really understand their needs. "

A new technology for diabetes in Africa
Diabetes is growing rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa due to urbanization and an aging population. Although once considered as rare in this region, it is estimated that diabetes will affect over 13 million people in sub-Saharan Africa in 2012 and that 350,000 of these people will die of associated diseases, but that so far only 15% of all diabetes cases in sub-Saharan Africa are diagnosed. By 2030, there will be an

The A to Z of traveling with diabetes
Diabetes should not prevent you from taking a long hike or making a trip to an exotic country. If you have diabetes and want to travel, you simply have to carefully plan your trip. There can always be unexpected events (lost luggage, the marooning of your boat on an exotic island), but if you are well prepared, you should be able to overcome these difficulties without any problems.
