Overview
Over a career spanning 30 years Dr. Tonmoy Sharma has served primarily as an acclaimed researcher having led countless international mental health clinical research trials, taught and trained students as a neuro-scientist and served as author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed published articles and five books on schizophrenia and mental illness.

He has never practiced medicine, nor treated patients. His entire career has been dedicated to putting his vast knowledge to further the mental health field with insights into pharmacology and cognitive impairment treatment.

Since moving to America to lead the nascent Sovereign Health Group in 2008 as its new CEO, he has grown the substance abuse treatment hospital group to nine facilities in five states.

Today’s Mission
Dr Sharma recognizes that the substance abuse treatment community is heading towards an inevitable next step in its evolution to ensure it continues to improve the quality of patients’ treatment.

The next phase will and must raise the bar and establish national standards of initial assessment, diagnosis and monitoring of symptoms as well as cognitive behavioral impairments so that the industry segment is truly on par with the rest of the medical practice areas – all of which are based on empirical-data. Without such a system, the substance abuse treatment community will remain behind the medical care curve as established by all other medical practice areas.

Today Dr. Sharma is committed to tirelessly promote and call for measurement-based care (MBC) in the diagnosis and treatment of addiction and mental health cognitive impairments so that a national standard measurement scale for level of addiction, and normalcy symptoms can be identified to standardize care and standardize treatment.

Awards & Honors
As a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrist’s London, Changing Minds Campaign, he helped lead a five-year initiative to combat the stigma of mental illness.

He gained prominence as a young doctor and scientist who was honored with numerous competitive international awards by prominent grant-making organizations. These include the Young Scientist Award by the Biennial European Workshop on Schizophrenia in 1992 and again in 1994; the N.I.H Young Investigator Award at the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research held in 1993; and the Association of European Psychiatrists Junior Psychiatrist Research Prize in 1996. He was the first scientist based outside the U.S. to receive the prestigious NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression) Young Investigator Award.

Throughout the decade Sharma would be honored with multiple prestigious awards and grants including the Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Psychiatrists that provided a grant to spend 1994 as a visiting scientist in the Department of Psychiatry Neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

Teaching
Sharma taught and served as a senior lecturer at the Institute for Psychiatry, London ultimately serving as Section Head of Cognitive Psychopharmacology at the Institute of Psychiatry. While there, he has been recognized with numerous awards, honors and grants for his work in advancing mental health and its treatments in the U.S., Europe and Southeast Asia.

Editorial Boards
Sharma has served on several editorial boards ranging from the Oxford University Press to the Journal of Schizophrenia and Brain Research. He has been selected a peer reviewer for 14 international medical journals and served on various advisory boards governing the development of antipsychotics.

Coming to America
In 2008, Sharma left the UK to explore new career opportunities in the U.S. initially joining The Cognition Group, a global company that provides Rater Training, Central Nervous System (CNS) scientific knowledge, technological innovation and project management expertise to the biopharmaceutical industry. Working with a team of programmers and technicians, Sharma developed a cognitive software testing platform, called Cogtest, to provide computerized cognitive assessment in clinical trials.

Sovereign Health Group
Sharma helped to found one of the country’s leading recovery and addiction institutions, Sovereign Health Group in 2009. With only 1,884 square feet, one patient and eight staff members; Sharma launched the first Sovereign Health facility in San Clemente, California. Since then, under his leadership in creating innovative treatments and follow-up care regimens, Sovereign Health has continued to grow. Today the company operates nine fully functional facilities in five states for addiction, mental illness and co-occurring disorders including substance abuse, mental health, and dual-diagnosis facilities, brain wellness, and behavioral health programs for eating disorders

Sharma’s commitment to providing high quality and comprehensive evidence-based treatment programs for adults and adolescents has never wavered. Sovereign Health Group is recognized as among the fastest growing companies in 2015 according to INC Magazine.

More locations and services are on the horizon as Sovereign Health Group continues to bring cutting-edge, reproducible and reliable treatment techniques to the field in order to provide the best quality of care to those who suffer with addictive diseases and behavioral health disorders.

Education
He received his medical training at Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh, India where he was awarded the MB BS in 1987.

In 1988, he continued his training at University College London, and the prestigious Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College also in London. Following this he received his MSc in Neuroscience at Guildhall London University in 1994.
