WomenCount Crowdfunds for ‘SixPack’ Slate of Women Candidates Who Will Flip Senate to Democratic Control
Democrats need to flip five seats to retake a majority in the Senate in November. Of the nine Senate seats that are being targeted as potential takeover opportunities, a record six have women nominees vying to oust the sitting Republican.
“There should be more focus on the fact that women candidates will decide the outcome of the Senate,” said Stacy Mason, executive director of WomenCount. “This election is history-making on multiple counts — it’s not just the presidential.”
The “SixPack” slate of women candidates includes Rep. Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), Gov. Maggie Hassan (N.H.), Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (Ariz.), former state legislator Deborah Ross (N.C.), former chief of staff to the Governor of Pennsylvania Katie McGinty (Pa.), and former Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge (Iowa). All are given a strong chance to win in November.
WomenCount’s crowdfunding site, launched last October and modeled after Kickstarter and Indiegogo, is the first peer-to-peer platform of its kind that uses crowdfunding tools to direct donations to political candidates. “Crowdfunding is the future of political fundraising,” said Mason. “Amassing large numbers of small-dollar donations through personal networks is a practical, tech-driven solution to addressing the crisis of our current campaign finance system.”
Already, Republican outside groups have spent more than $70 million to defeat Democratic Senate candidates this cycle, and that amount is expected to grow dramatically.
In addition to slates of candidates who will flip Senate and House seats, the WomenCount platform also features issue-based slates, such as champions for gun reform, climate change, immigration, etc. Demographic slates allow donors to crowdfund to elect more African-American women, Latinas, LGBT candidates, and others.
There are currently 20 women in the Senate. If all six candidates on the “SixPack” slate win, and if former Attorney General Catherine Masto prevails in Nevada, there will be a record 25 women serving in the Senate. Two women are retiring: Barbara Boxer (Calif) and Barbara Mikulski (Md). Boxer’s seat is already certain to be filled by a woman.
