Living well: ‘4Detroit’s Health’ free event June 11 to provide expert information on diet, exercise

With spring in full swing, thoughts about improving our diet and exercise habits are in full bloom. Area residents are invited to take advantage of a free, two-day learning experience, “4Detroit’s Health,” on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, at the City Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church, 8816 Grand River Ave., Detroit. The event is the first annual community health program facilitated by this historic congregation.

Dr. Terry Mason, MD, Chief Operating Officer of the Cook County, Illinois, Department of Public Health and a leading participant in the 2011 film documentary “Forks over Knives,” is the featured speaker. His presentation, “Death is on the Plate,” will focus on nutrition habits and the effect on the prevention of chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.
Dr. Mason will be joined by Dr. Paul Musson, MD, of Flint, a 35-year medical veteran who specializes in internal medicine and addiction medicine. Presentations are scheduled to begin Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

A “Food and Fun” Taste Fare event takes place later that day from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. There, guests will have the opportunity to sample a variety of tasty and healthy recipes. At 3 p.m. a “Fix-2-Fit” session will be held in the City Temple church sanctuary with Dr. Terry Mason. Dr. Mason will present a free two-hour session on dietary causes of chronic diseases and natural, easy-to-begin processes to reverse your negative health trends. Questions will be entertained in the last half-hour.

Visitors are welcome to come back Sunday morning, June 12 at 9 a.m. for an exercise demonstration by Lazet Boatmon-Pelzer of the Life Center Detroit fitness organization. Boatmon-Pelzer is a health and wellness advocate and a 19-year certified fitness professional. She’s also the author of Workout and Worship: 8 Steps to Physical and Spiritual Health.
