Sports has had its share of runs through the pages of history. Though today it is widely used for health and fitness purposes, along with being played as a competition on global platforms, its origins can be traced back to as early as 2000 BC. Combat sport dates back to the Greeks who introduced the sport of pankration into the Olympic Games. The word pankration is a combination of two Greek words meaning “all” and “powers”. Pankration is the first recorded form of what later came to be known as mixed martial arts.

Following is a brief description of three forms of martial arts that are widely followed today.

Boxing

Think Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson. Those punches flying through the air with precision and agility is what boxing encompasses. It aims at weakening the opponent and knocking them down. This is a sport that involves the fists and where kicking is not allowed. Practicing this sport makes one an expert at position, distance, and timing. Just to learn the proper punching technique can take years, so it calls for great dedication and passion.

Wrestling

This combat sport involves grappling techniques like throws and take-downs, joint locks, and pins. Wrestling is categorized into international wrestling and folk wrestling. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is the premier body for this sport.

Professional wrestling is now more of an entertainment than a sport owing to its choreographed moves. The fights are high on the drama and theatrics factor with feud between fighters used as promotional strategy for upcoming matches.

Kickboxing

This sport involves kicking and punching, and has been developed from karate, Muay Thai, and Western boxing. It combines punches, kicks, blocks, and evasive maneuvers to disarm an opponent which makes it quite the self-defense technique. Depending on the style it could also involve knee strikes, headbutts, and clinching.

Although it has its roots in Japan and Thailand, the American kickboxing version is quite popular. There is also a branch of kickboxing called the cardio kickboxing which is primarily used for fitness like Tae Bo.
