‘Balloons Over Bavarian Inn’ Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Launches of Lighter Than Air Craft on Memorial Weekend
In what has become a popular annual event, some of the most accomplished hot air balloon pilots from across the Midwest will take to the skies over Frankenmuth this Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30, 2016) for “Balloons Over Bavarian Inn.”The weekend, with the fun it typically brings, is also a competitive one for balloonists, with a series of flights starting Friday evening (May 27), continuing on Saturday and Sunday, and culminating on Monday, May 30. The balloon events are co-sponsored by Bavarian Inn Lodge and Gordon’s Foodservice.
Spectators will be able to experience balloon launches and flyovers at Frankenmuth River Place Field each morning and evening of Memorial Day Weekend. A full schedule of the Balloons Over Bavarian Inn event, which will be held in conjunction with Dog Bowl 2016, can be found online at http://frankenmuthriverplace.com/balloons-over-bavarian-inn/. Follow the action on Facebook by liking “Balloons Over Bavarian Inn” & Frankenmuth Hot Air Balloon Glow Village. Twitter Updates @BalloonsInMuth. Admission to balloon events is free.
The entire staff at the Bavarian Inn Lodge looks forward to hosting the event.
“This is one of our most popular happenings,” said Jim Engel, chief operating officer. “We’ve been able to attract some of the most proficient (and competitive) balloon pilots in the region, including competitors from three surrounding states and from as far away as Iowa.”
This marks the 10th anniversary of balloons flying competitively over the skies of Franeknmuth. Seven of the pilots have flown every year since the event’s inception.
Derrick Jones, the competition director for Balloons Over Bavarian Inn, says the popularity of the event has a lot to do with the family friendly features for which Frankenmuth is known.
Jones states, “It has been a joy to bring the ballooning community together in Frankenmuth. This is the first ballooning event of the season each year and what better place for a reunion of friends than Frankenmuth!”
Spectators will experience the village of balloons at the Balloon Glow Event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings at River Place Field, giving them an opportunity to walk amongst 15 tethered hot air balloons that glow in the evening sky. Spectators can meet the pilots and crew, get autographs and even take pictures with their children inside or next to the pilot and his basket.
Piloting hot air balloons is a growing sport that is sophisticated and technical. The use of websites to track wind speeds and directions for every thousand foot level combined with the use of GPS technology allows pilots to better target their destination. This brings an unparalleled precision to the sport. During the morning and evening flights, the pilots will navigate their balloon to certain targets, placed and assigned to them by the officials.
