Unveiling the Hidden Footprint: Survey Measures Carbon

A new survey launched recently by Professor Dawid Hanak aims to shine a light on the often-overlooked carbon footprint of train station users. In collaboration with the Connected Places Catapult and funded by the Innovation Lunchpad Network+, the project "Identifying challenges and opportunities in decarbonising UK train stations" seeks to understand how passengers and employees travel to and from stations and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.

"Train stations play a crucial role in sustainable transportation, but their own sustainability needs closer examination," states Professor Hanak. "This survey will help us quantify the carbon footprint of station users, allowing us to develop targeted solutions to promote greener commuting options."

The survey, designed to be completed in 5-10 minutes, asks participants about their usual mode of transport to and from the station, the frequency of their visits, and any alternative options they might consider. This data will be used to estimate the station's overall carbon footprint and identify areas for improvement.

Key Survey Insights will help to:

- Quantify the carbon footprint of train station user commutes.

- Identify the most common travel modes used by passengers and employees.

- Explore how to promote sustainable travel options like walking, cycling, and public transport.

- Inform strategies for reducing the overall carbon footprint of train stations.

Professor Hanak encourages everyone who visits or works at a train station to participate in the survey. "Your input is invaluable in helping us create a more sustainable future for our transportation networks," he adds.
