HASE BIKES PINO: the family-taxi-cargo-tandem

HASE BIKES PINO: the family-taxi-cargo-tandem

If a bike can make two people happy at the same time, it’s a tandem. When the rear rider is steering and the front rider is in a sporty, low, recumbent seat, it’s a PINO.

And now that PINO number 5,555 has been built and shipped off, the manufactory in the heart of the German Ruhr district is brimming with pride. Proud of a bike that now delights cyclists on all five continents with its exceptional quality, innovative technology and ongoing evolution.

HASE BIKES built its first PINO by hand 18 years ago as a pure semi-recumbent tandem on which two adults could share a sporty, safe and communicative cycling experience – e.g. when taking weekend excursions into the countryside or spending weeks, months or years traversing various countries, or even the whole world. And indeed, it wasn’t long before the PINO had become the favourite bike of numerous globetrotters, who have used it for the most unbelievable tours. (You can find many of their amazing stories online.)

Then, in 2000, HASE BIKES developed an ingenious accessory that made it possible to quickly transform the PINO into a family taxi: the Children's Crankset can be easily mounted to the frame with a quick-release mechanism. Now, kids in London, Berlin and other cities and towns around the world are being chauffered to school or nursery by tandem. On the way, they can even help with the pedalling and enjoy the admiring looks of passers-by. The child-friendly PINO is also perfect for longer family cycling tours – after all, it is loads of fun for riders of all ages, and there is even a freewheel mechanism so that little co-pilots can also rest their legs now and then.

In 2013 HASE BIKES came up with a new line of PINO options that transform the tandem into the ultimate cargo-hauling city bike. With the Porter Bag, the front seat becomes a rainproof cargo area with a capacity of 120 litres; when not in use, the empty bag can be folded up and stowed conveniently behind the seat. Additional transport capacity can be added with the foldable Porter Rack, which also functions as an extremely sturdy double kickstand. The Rack can easily hold two beverage crates and, thanks to the low centre of gravity, makes the handling even more stable.

And now 2016 has become the year of the PINO STEPS – the latest development from HASE BIKES’ team of engineers. This PINO model comes with a powerful Shimano mid-drive system that can be easily switched on when the hill is too steep, the cargo too heavy or the motivation too low. With a built-in motor, the family-taxi-cargo-tandem can be a real alternative to owning a car in the city.

The hand-built PINO is not only multitalented but also multi-award-winning: the PINO PORTER won the Eurobike Award for innovative products in 2013 and the Red Dot Award for Product Design in 2014. These prizes are now proudly on display at the manufactory in Waltrop. “And there are more to come!” the HASE BIKES team has no doubt. What else would you expect from a staff of people who live and breathe cycling?
The next innovations are never far off … for the next 5,555 PINOs and 11,110 happy cyclists. At least.
