The Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce Addresses Community Needs in Washington

Nine representatives from the Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce traveled to Washington D.C. as part of Congressman John Mica’s semi-annual fly-In.

The traveling group for the two-day trip included Sanford Chamber Board Chairman Scott Sturgill of Durable Safety Products, City of Sanford Economic Development Director Bob Turk, Penny DiNatale of Regions Bank, Chamber Economic Development Committee Chair Dawn Sipley of Link Staffing Services, Jolene Hale of Seminole State College, Danny Tillis of Tillis Pest Control, John Stout and Shirley Stamper of John and Shirley’s Catering, and Chamber President/CEO Frank Hale.

Chairman Scott Sturgill said, “The Chamber’s participation in events like this provide our members with a first-hand opportunity to actively participate in the government process and bring issues of major importance to elected and bureaucratic leaders in the Capitol.”

Primary on the delegations’ agenda for this trip was getting control of the former dry cleaner site at 121 Palmetto Ave. in downtown Sanford so that redevelopment of several key parcels along Palmetto Ave. can occur. The group met with Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio, along with senior representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency. According to Sturgill, “We believe we made good progress related to our key issue.”

In the discussions with the Senators, the group also discussed the Chamber’s desire to bring sensible local control to the Sanford Housing Authority and to accelerate movement to developing Housing Authority property within the Goldsboro neighborhood.

Congressman Mica hosted the group with breakfast in the Congressional Dining Room, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol, participation at a Congressional hearing of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, a private tour of the Congressional Library and lunch in the Library’s Members Room. Congressman Jeff Miller-R-Fla. was the speaker for the luncheon. During his talk, he addressed military readiness and Veteran’s Affairs issues.

Later in the afternoon, the group met with Congressman Pete Sessions, R-TX, and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., before attending a reception at the Rayburn Office Building and traveling back to Sanford.

The Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce was established in 1920 to create and foster a dynamic business climate that provides a higher quality of life for community members. It serves the Central Florida communities of Seminole, Orange, Volusia, Brevard, and Lake counties, providing leadership on major growth, education, and cultural issues that affect business and the overall community.
