Germany Healthcare Outlook

Germany, officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany, is situated in Central and Western Europe and has a population of 83.2 million people spread across a territory covering 357,022 square kilometers. In 2019, Germany experienced a GDP growth rate of 0.6%. The country operates a comprehensive multi-payer healthcare system that caters to both statutory health insurance for individuals with incomes below a specific threshold and private health insurance for those with higher incomes who opt to procure their own coverage.

The healthcare system consists of two main subsystems: statutory health insurance (SHI) and private health insurance. SHI includes competing, not-for-profit, non-governmental health insurance plans referred to as sickness funds. Additionally, private health insurance options are available. Long-term care services are managed separately through Germany's mandatory statutory long-term care insurance (LTCI). Notably, healthcare providers, including hospitals and physicians, serve patients irrespective of whether they are covered by SHI or private insurance.

The financing of the German healthcare system is predominantly borne by employers and employees through premiums. Workers contribute approximately 7.5% of their salary to a public health insurance pool, with employers matching this 7.5% contribution. This principle of shared responsibility persists in the modern German system, ensuring that everyone covered by statutory insurance has equal access to medical care. The system also imposes strict limits on out-of-pocket costs, effectively minimizing the occurrence of unexpected medical expenses.
