milan, 31.10.2007 - Cacao Design project wins gold medal at the “Sappi International Printer of the Year 2007”.

A major international recognition for Cacao Design (www.cacaodesign.it), a young studio specialising in branding and web design, thanks to its long-standing partnership with a printer that has always pursued excellence and courted new challenges: Fontegrafica (www.fontegrafica.it).

The exclusive JF Kennedy gallery in Boston was the setting for the recent presentation of the most sought-after awards in the print sector: the “Sappi International Printers of the Year Award”. Cacao Design, a young studio specialising in branding and web design, is immensely proud to share in the achievement of Fontegrafica with its 2007 calendar “micro and macro”, winner of the highest award in the “Printer’s Own Promotion” category.

What made this piece stand out from the thousands of competing projects was not only the excellence of the printing but also the creative sophistication which transformed the calendar into a timeless device, at once elegant and striking. Images of 12 seemingly random small objects of daily use were printed using various techniques designed to enhance their authenticity, to produce a calendar that is about 2 metres tall when hung. It is delivered complete with an exclusive professional magnifying glass, also designed ad hoc by Cacao Design.

The lens is required to read the days of the month, deliberately printed in a font size so small as to be illegible to the naked eye: an ironic invitation to move closer and really analyse the incredible quality of the 12 prints. To maintain the extreme detail of the images (captured via an innovative shooting technique by FBI Milano), they were printed in ultra-high definition using a combination of conventional and stochastic screens.

The jury, made up of 4 eminent figures from the world of graphic design, made the following comment on the calendar: “Perfect! A magnificent piece. Big, bold, spectacular colour over a large surface. Good use of texture and unusual inks.” This is not the first time that one of Cacao Design’s projects has received this kind of recognition in the sector: in its three years of existence, Cacao Design has already been honoured by publication in prestigious annuals of the calibre of Red-Dot Communication, ADCI (the Italian Art Directors Club), How Design Annual, Best of Brochure Design, ReBrand100, Type Directors Club, International Design Yearbook, LogoLounge, D&AD Global Awards, ED Awards and Crack World New Graphic Design.

Fontegrafica is no stranger to important honours either (especially in the Sappi Printers of the Year Awards, where it has obtained various gold awards in previous editions), but on this occasion its achievement is truly historic. Never before in the history of the competition has an entrant won more than one gold medal (a total of 9 are awarded, one for each of the categories in which work is submitted) but, thanks to unceasing dedication to experimentation and continuous research into innovative production techniques, its three European gold medals were followed by two global golds in the Printer’s Own Promotion and General Print categories (with the calendar and Breil brochure respectively).
