MATERIALICA 2007 Award for the Best Product of the Year - Skis and Sheets of Stone

From the 16th to 18th of October 2007 TechnoCarbon Technologies has presented for the first time a sheet of the composite material CFS (CarbonFibre Stone), which has been developped by the Munich company.

At this industrial fair TechnoCarbon Technologies and the Suisse Ski manufacturer have been awarded for the best product of the year. The Ski with CFS inside had convinced the high academic jury of the amazing properties of this newly developped composite material.

The CFS-sheet has a strength of 4.2 mm with an inside layer of 3 mm granite from China. The sheet measures 2.6 by 1.4 m and shows surprisingly - yes it even sounds so if you knock on it - properties which one knows elsewise from a metal sheet, and that at a specific weight of 2.78 g/cm³, nearly the one of aluminium.

The sheet bows in both directions without breaking and consists of a much higher stiffness than a comparable aluminium sheet. The stone in the middle layer has been pre-loaded by the manufacturing method which has been developped by TechnoCarbon Technologies. The sheet is easily to be cut, glued and applied in many areas wherein until today metal or aluminium sheet had been used. The material is resistant against impacts of weather, water temperatures in awide range. It shows low vibrations an oscillates lineary back into the initial position and it has an extremely low coefficient of elongation which can be adjusted according to the requirements even to zero. Coefficient of elongation and e-module become engineerable by the adjusting of the strength proportion of the stone and the carbon fibre layers. The proportion between stiffness and pressure strength in proportion to the specific weight against strength of the carbon fibre layer and the stone variety is by the factor 2 better than these proportions at steel or aluminium, that is why this material offers itself as the one with a much better potential in light construction and may so be applied even in automotive construction or in the aviation.

Application areas of these light CFS sheets are to be found by the reason of its good damping qualities in machine construction in vibration critical zones, in the construction of air foils, in rotor blades of wind mills, in ship construction in the carcass and as planking, in pressure parts in automotive construction and as leaf spring. The fatigue resistance has been proven in a recent test: after one million loads the material did show any fatigue.

TechnoCarbon Technologies also presented a double-T-beam which regarding its stiffness in comparison with its elder brother of steel just weights the half at same dimensions.

At the manufacturing of CFS extremely less CO2 is emitted as at the manufacturing of steel and aluminium.

Prospective thinking experts forecast best market chances of CFS at a fortunate price development. Given the increasing steel prices the managers are optimistic. The benefit for the climate is highly evident.
