The Construction Centre

The Construction Centre

Following the release of new guidance issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Institute of Directors (IoD) this week, The Construction Centre today released a statement fully supporting of the document. The guidance has been written for directors and is designed to provide a basis for creating and implementing an effective Health and Safety strategy.

The report sets out an agenda where Health and Safety should be led from board level with visible, strong and active commitment. It recommends worker involvement and continual assessment and review. The four main areas of the document regard planning, delivery, monitoring and review and detail how each step should make Health and Safety an integral part of a company’s culture, performance and standards.

The Construction Centre stated that the report would serve to help the construction industry grapple with health and safety issues in the workplace. In the light of the recent tragedy at Terminal Five, Heathrow the release of the report reiterates just how important Health and Safety is.

Chair of HSC, Judith Hackett stated “It is visible leadership from the top of an organisation which truly makes for an effective health and safety culture which in turn delivers good health and safety performance… The challenge before us is changing behaviour. This guidance makes it clear what directors need to do but it is their action and delivery which will really count.”

Richard Simmons, Managing Director at The Construction Centre and owner of a construction company for over 30 years said “If I walked around our sites and saw for example somebody cutting a paving slab with no dust mask I would ask the worker how important his lungs were to him. Over time I change my employee’s view of Health and Safety; that it wasn’t to protect the employer but was about saving their lives. Putting health and safety into caring practical terms was much more effective. This document will go some way to re-enforce the issue that health and safety is a responsibility for everyone to adopt; from the board to the workforce to the contractor.”

In response to ongoing Health and Safety issues throughout the building industry, The Construction Centre is considering adding an additional section to its website dedicated to providing information and resources in this area.

In a recent report issued by the UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) indicated that when positive action is taken regarding health and safety there is an average reduction of accidents by 25%.

The Construction Centre hopes that this will be one of many ways in which the HSE will continue to promote health and safety as a beneficial and ultimately life saving responsibility for all businesses within the Construction industry.

2009 Economy and Budget: It's broken and it can't be fixed
Richard Simmons, Managing Director at The Construction Centre .co.uk suggests the UK economy may never recover... The great problem with democracy and a 5 year election cycle is that there is little incentive for the Government to speak the truth or candidly make honest forecasts. In October last year the Government and Bank of England were ‘pretending to be surprised’ that the forecast contraction in GDP for 2009 was at 0.5%
