ST. LOUIS, MO - July 18, 2023 - ThrottleNet said the biggest potential data threats to business may not involve hackers in foreign countries, but with a disgruntled employee who was just dismissed from the company. These rogue employees present a real danger to the security of a company or organization.

"A study by Intermedia took a hard look at employee data theft including the number of employees who left their jobs and the information they took with them. The report indicates 89% of ex-employees were walking away with at least one password they used daily on the job," said George Rosenthal, ThrottleNet President. "These rogue employees are technically armed and dangerous to your business health."

Rosenthal said these passwords are usually memorized and may provide access to key corporate information on Salesforce, PayPal, email, SharePoint, the company Facebook page and more, all can be used to a company's disadvantage.

"An ex-employee could do anything from posting a less than flattering photo of their boss on social media to even leaking passwords to a Russian hacker. Fortunately, businesses can take a variety of proactive methods to deal with newly dismissed workers and still protect their data."

According to Rosenthal the first step is to change all key passwords. "New passwords should be something more than a one-digit or one-letter change. It should be something more unique and secure beyond anything the old employee would think of."

Secondly, companies should revoke an employee's access when they leave. "Processes should be built around user lifecycle management. Conduct a formal exit interview and take action on the answers. Do more than just dealing with digital matters and de-activating and collecting their badge. Take steps to prevent them from entering the building."

Third, Rosenthal recommends companies should avoid using personal services with a Cloud solution. "Employees can access some programs like Dropbox and Google Docs through personal passwords when away from the office. You can use a more secure cloud-based solution like those offered by ThrottleNet and others to give you full administrative control. It's easier to recover missing critical files if they are stored on a corporate cloud than on a personal Dropbox."

He also stresses the use of a single sign-on (SSO) portal to manage and control access. "SSO reduces the potential for rogue access and users can be de-provisioned with a single click. This gives employees access to all their apps with just a single password and makes Cloud IT much, much simpler."

"An upset ex-employee can purge their personal cloud storage resulting in companies losing copies of their work, or steal secrets which could be used by competitors, and even change data resulting in a regulatory compliance failure and potential fines. Be aware the biggest threat to your data security may not be some foreign operative but the former co-worker who used to sit next to you."
