10th Annual HR Strategies In Energy Opens

19 May 2015, Dubai – The 10th Annual HR Strategies in Energy, a gathering of regional and global HR experts in the Energy sector, was inaugurated at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa Hotel, Dubai, U.A.E. Conceptualized under the theme of “Bridging the Talent Gap - Innovation & Learning in Changing Times”, the forum, in its tenth year, also included HR strategies from the power & utilities sector in the GCC.

Organized by Fleming Gulf, the summit saw chairman Eric Pietrac - VP HR & Sustainability of Subsea 7, UK welcome the participants and deliver the opening remarks to over 70 delegates and exhibitors gathered. Setting the tone for the summit; keynote speaker, Mr. Sultan Al Hajji, VP & Chief Strategy Officer of TOTAL E&P UAE orated on the importance of talent management for peak performance as well as sharing insights on knowledge management, succession planning and resource mapping.

Highlights of day one included presentations by Bjarte Bogsnes from Statoil, Norway who spoke on 'A Management Model for New People and Business Realities' and Roopa Hassan, Manager- Sourcing & Qualification of Dubai Electricity & Water Authority(DEWA), U.A.E. who spoke about the importance of employee retention and motivation in the power and utilities sector. The day concluded with a interactive panel discussion - ' Knowledge Transfer - New Generation on board ' a topic that most organizations felt was a key area of concern as they experience knowledge losses, skill shortages and a lack of mentoring capabilities within their workforce.

Voicing her opinion, Kanupriya Singh, Production Head – HR from Fleming Gulf said “It has been forecasted that 50% of the aging workforce is heading towards retirement in the next five years, with just 1 young worker to replace every 4 approaching retirement. With this, the energy industry needs to attract, recruit, and retain the required talent in order to be in pace with the industry growth and meet future global energy market requirements. New challenges are being discussed at the board table - from talent shortages to big crew changes to smart recruitment and retention. The expectation from HR has increased in the face of the oil price decline and the need to address these challenges are more than ever"
