EasyJet and SEA Employees Provide Substandard Customer Service, Resulting in Missed Flights and Stress for Pregnant Passenger

Milan, Italy - 19.05.2023 - A distressing incident unfolded at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) on the 17th of May, when a couple, one of whom is seven months pregnant, encountered a series of unfortunate events leading to missed flights and significant inconvenience. The incident has raised concerns over passenger treatment, overbooking practices, and the responsibility of airport personnel.
The couple had booked flight EJU3855 from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS), scheduled to arrive on 17th of May, approximately at 18:00. However, upon their arrival, they were informed by multiple representatives of SEA (SEA Aeroporti di Milano) that they could not check-in until 13:30, resulting in a four-hour wait.
What followed was a series of confusing and frustrating interactions with SEA and EasyJet employees. The couple, who had already checked-in and possessed boarding passes, were informed that their assigned seats did not exist on the plane due to overbooking. Eventually, they were checked-in without seat assignments and their bags were labeled as standby.
Assurances were given that if seats became available, they would be accommodated on the flight, with a promise of compensation of €250 per person if they were unable to secure seats. Furthermore, they were instructed to hand over their boarding passes to gate agents after boarding concluded, ensuring they would be recognized and placed on the plane if seats remained.
However, when the couple presented their boarding passes to the gate agents, they were initially rebuffed and directed to the seating area. Only after recounting their situation did the agents acknowledge the issue. Subsequently, the couple was informed that they would not be able to board the flight and their bags were to be removed from the plane. They were then rebooked on a later flight (EJU3857) departing at 18:30, with instructions to collect their baggage from carousel 1 and recheck the bags themselves.
Navigating the airport proved to be challenging, as inadequate signage led to wasted time and confusion. Despite following the instructions provided by SEA and EasyJet staff, the couple did not find their bags at carousel 1. After going through security check again without their baggage rechecked they arrived at the new gate for flight EJU3857. After having their boarding passes scanned they were told that by SEA and EasyJet staff that if they left on the 18:30 flight their baggage would not be forwarded to them in Amsterdam and it would be lost forever and that the bags were actually at carousel 7, not carousel 1. Having been told this information the couple opted to stay and further inquire into their missing luggage.
They were later informed by a helpful airport worker that carousel 7 was designated for non-Schengen flights, contrary to the information provided to them earlier.
After a delay and further complications, the couple filed a Delayed Baggage claim and eventually secured a new flight for the following day, along with accommodation at an off-site hotel.
The couple expresses deep concern and disappointment over the treatment they received during this ordeal, which not only caused them immense stress but also posed potential risks to the health and well-being of the expectant mother. They emphasize the need for fair compensation to address the significant inconveniences endured.
Moreover, the incident raises questions about the customer-centricity of overbooking practices and highlights the need for better coordination and communication between airport authorities and airline staff. It is noteworthy that the gate agents involved were not EasyJet employees but rather personnel rented out to EasyJet by SEA, thus necessitating SEA's involvement in addressing the displayed lack of competence.
The affected individuals call upon the relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, ensure appropriate compensation for their suffering, and take measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
