Bridging the Mental Barrier to Success in Golf - Free Audiobook Reveals the Secrets to the Perfect Game

Press release from: HeadProCoaching Mathias Maul

A consistent swing is the key factor in a successful game of golf. But while that swing may have been perfect during all those hours of training, the body often seems to ‘forget’ it as the golfer addresses the ball at the first tee of a tournament. To address this problem, and others like it, golfers need “mental coaching”, a set of techniques that only start where technical training ends.

In his new audiobook, “The 20th Hole at 5 PM”, sports psychologist and mental golf coach, Mathias Maul, reveals some of the vital secrets that will help you do just that – become a winner, consistently. This audio series is aimed at curing some of the common ailments suffered by golfers all over the world. It is distributed as a free podcast, available at Apple’s iTunes Music Store and the author’s web site.

Accompanying each episode of this series is an e-book containing more in-depth information, and a “cheat sheet” with mental coaching exercises that the golfer can carry while on the golf course. Producer Mathias Maul describes it as “a set of drills for the golfer’s mind.” But do not be put off by the word “drill” – this series is designed to bring a sense of effortlessness to every golfer’s game.

Technical golf training does not, and cannot, solve the main barrier to success – negative emotions. And these emotions have a proven effect on tension within the body. Increased tension can cause a miniscule difference in movement, making the club head stray from what might have been a perfect path, causing it to hit the ball just a fraction of an inch off-center and sending it flying into the rough instead of onto the fairway. Even the smallest mental stress – caused by, say, spotting your boss in the gallery – can have a devastating effect and obliterate all the good things you learned in your technical training.

The “zone,” that elusive state characterized by complete – and effortless – control of mind and body, is the holy grail of golf, the hallmark of all legendary professional players. But how to get into the zone, easily, consistently, is considered one of the last great mysteries of this Great Game. Mathias Maul’s “HeadProCoaching” Techniques are designed to do just that – get golfers into the zone and keep them there, effortlessly.

Let’s not forget, though, that each golfer is unique, that each golfer thinks differently, so “mental coaching” cannot be taught like, say, the technical aspects of a perfect swing.

“All golfers have basically similar bones, joints, muscles,” says Mathias, “but what's going on between their ears – inside their minds – is very different, one from the other. There is no such thing as a universal zone or state of mind. You have to be specific and work with every golfer individually so that each one can reach his, or her own unique zone.”

In his private sessions, Mathias Maul works only with golfers playing to a handicap of 12 or lower. At that level, the technical aspect of the game tends to be fairly stable, so the mental aspect becomes more important – a prerequisite for successful mental coaching. His audiobook, or podcast, is aimed at all those golfers who have not yet reached this “magical” threshold but who, in striving for success, feel they could also benefit from exposure to these advanced techniques – all the “would-be winners” out there, in other words.

The first episode of the podcast, “What’s Between Your Ears?”, is available from October 5, 2007 at the iTunes Music Store or the HeadProCoaching website at www.headprocoaching.com. New episodes will be released every two weeks. The first season contains six episodes, dealing with diverse topics like the “Mental Reset Button”, “Sumo Golf” and the connection between training dolphins and golfers. At the end of the first season, a CD will be published containing an hour-long hypnosis session using HeadProCoaching techniques that will improve, substantially, each and every adherent’s golf game.

ABOUT THE NARRATOR

Robert Pike Daniel “is the perfect fit for this project,” says podcast producer Mathias Maul. “His incredibly sonorous and flexible voice is exactly what I wanted.” Robert, born in Scotland and raised in South Africa, worked as a journalist in London, including a stint at the BBC, before moving to Los Angeles where he works as a film and stage actor, and as a busy voiceover artist. Robert is also an award winning film maker.

ABOUT PODCASTS

A podcast is an audiobook with chapters, or episodes, delivered to subscribers automatically as soon as they are made available. Most podcasts, including “The 20th Hole at Five PM”, are available at Apple’s iTunes Music store for free download. With a compatible audio player, the listener can enjoy the episodes anywhere, including the driving range, or in the car during the drive to the golf course.

ABOUT HEADPROCOACHING

Combining years of coaching experience with current research, Mathias Maul’s “HeadProCoaching” Techniques are an amalgam of scientifically proven coaching interventions, modern sports hypnosis, and the most up-to-date thinking in the field. His method appeals to amateur and professional golfers alike.

Based in Hamburg, Germany, Mathias works with golfers from all over the world, in private sessions or one-day training courses, using fluent English or German. He also uses videoconferencing and telephonic technologies for some of his coaching sessions, when needed.

A typical Mathias Maul client has reached the limits of what is possible with technical golf training alone, and he teaches these clients how to add mental techniques to their technical prowess to reach even greater success. Avoiding association with so-called “new-age” methods, Mathias ensures that his techniques have a scientific and pragmatic foundation.

He insists that a combination of technical and mental training is the key to lasting success. “Take ten technical golf teachers, and they will teach you ten different swings,” says Mathias. “But take ten mental golf coaches, and most of them will probably insist that there is only one universal ‘zone’ state. I firmly believe that this is wrong. Everyone has his own specific state of mind that helps him play a great game, and it must be co-developed with his specific technical talent, within his own personal and social context.”
